Unit Three: Ancient India and China
Organizing Principle: The Indian subcontinent was the site of one of the world’s most
famous ancient civilizations, and Indian culture has had a major influence on the
development of multiple Asian societies.
Essential Questions cover Chapters 13-18
1. How did geography affect early settlement in India?
2. What can artifacts tell us about daily life in Mohenjo-Daro?
3. What are the origins and beliefs of Hinduism?
4. What are the major beliefs and teachings of Buddhism?
5. What are the similarities and differences between Hinduism and Buddhism?
6. Why is the period known as the Gupta Empire known as a “golden age?”
Reading Skills include reading a map, compare/contrast, sequencing events, making predictions,
drawing conclusions, and selecting useful information.
Organizing Principle: Ancient China developed a unique and long lasting culture that served as a
cradle of Asian civilization, and a source of important intellectual achievement.
Essential Questions cover chapters 19-24
1. How did the geography affect life in ancient China?
2. What do Shang artifacts reveal about this civilization?
3. How did Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism influence political rule in ancient China?
4. What were the accomplishments of Emperor Qin and the Qin Dynasty?
5. In what ways did the Han Dynasty improve government and daily life in China?
6. How did the Silk Road promote an exchange of goods and ideas in the ancient world?
