• Cell walls are found in:
– Plants
– Bacteria
– Algae
– Fungi
– Some archaea
Animals and protozoa do not have cell walls
What are cell walls made of?
• Plant and Algae Cell Walls – cellulose
• Bacterial Cell Wall – peptidoglycan
• Fungi cell wall- chitin
• Archaea cell wall- isoprenyl ether
It’s Functions
• Helps maintain shape
• Controls the rate and direction of cell
growth
• Provides a defensive coat
• Acts as a pressure vessel
Difference between the cell wall
and cell membrane
• The cell wall is found in plant cells
whereas the cell membrane is found in
animal cells.
• The cell wall is completely permeable
whereas the cell membrane is semi –
permeable.
• The cell wall is made up of cellulose.
The cell membrane is made up of lipids
and proteins.
