EGYPTIAN GODS
The force of the nation
THE GODS
• The beliefs and rituals formed the core of ancient Egyptian
religion
• Represented natural forces and phenomena, and were appeased
through offerings
• There were daily rituals for caring for the gods and festivals
celebrating specific gods
• The gods' lives were expressed in myths and in intricate
relationships between each other
• Took the form of animals, humans, objects, and combinations of
different forms
• There were Regional and National gods that rose and fell from
prominence
AMUN
• The Creator God
• “hidden one” or “Invisible one”
• The main deity of Thebes, view as the
“Father”- City of Amun
• When Thebes became the capital, Amun
became a National God
• The Greeks worshipped Ammon, view this
god as a form of Zeus
• Ankh- symbol representing “Eternal Life”
also called the “Key of Life” representing
the permanence of their rule
RA, THE SUN GOD
• Ra was the sun god.
• Body of Human, head of a Falcon
• Ra was swallowed every night by the sky
goddess Nut, and was reborn every
morning.
• travelled through the underworld at night
• Ra and Amun were eventually combined
into one God: Amun-Ra, the King of the
Gods
ISIS, PROTECTIVE GODDESS
• Isis was a protective & fertility
goddess.
• The Sister-Wife of Osiris and the
mother of Horus.
• Associated with thrones because her
lap was the first 'throne‘ that Horus sat
upon.
• 'Isis knot' and is a symbol of
protection.
OSIRIS, LORD OF THE DEAD
• Osiris was the god of the dead,
resurrection and fertility
• the brother/husband of Isis. Father of
Horus.
• prayed to him for the protection of dead
ancestors
• gave the people the gift of barley, one of
their most important crops.
• King of the Gods until he was killed by
Seth
ANUBIS, GOD OF EMBALMING
• Anubis was the god of embalming and
dying
• jackals were often seen in cemeteries,
believed that Anubis watched over the
dead.
• helped to embalm Osiris after he was killed by
Seth.
• Priests often wore a mask of Anubis during
mummification ceremonies.
SETH (SET), CHAOS
• Seth was the god of chaos, evil, and
darkness
• represented everything that threatened
harmony in Egypt.
• Red seen as evil because of connection to
Seth
• Associated with War, Storms, and Deserts
• brother of Osiris and Isis.
• Murdered Osiris, then battled with his
nephew Horus to be the ruler of the living.
HORUS
• Horus was a god of the sky.
• most well-known as the protector of the ruler
of Egypt.
• The Egyptians believed that the pharaoh was
the 'living Horus'.
• He is the son of Osiris and Isis
• Eye Of Horus- symbol of
protection, royal power, and
good health
BASTET, THE CAT LADY
• Bastet was a protective goddess.
• sometimes appeared with the head of a
lioness to protect the king in battle.
• The cat was a symbol of Bastet. The ancient
Egyptians made many statues of cats to
honour Bastet.
• one of the daughters of the sun god, Ra.
HATHOR
• Hathor was a protective goddess.
• She was also the goddess of love and joy.
• the wife of Horus, and was sometimes
thought of as the mother of the pharaoh.
• the goddess of the desert and the turquoise
mines in the Sinai.
PTAH, MR. FIX-IT
• Ptah was the god of craftsmen.
• In one creation myth Ptah was a creator
god. He spoke the words and the world
came into being.
• He may have originally been a fertility god.
SOBEK
• Symbolized he Strength of the Pharaoh
• Sometimes depicted as a complete crocodile
• Also seen as a protective God when dealing
with the Nile
