Bio109- Review for lectures 1-4 - Where does the Plant Kingdom fit?
1. The domain Bacteria used to be called “Eubacteria” What is the meaning of the prefix “eu”?
2. What is the meaning of the pre-fix “pro”
3. If the meaning of the word karyos is “center of” or the “nucleus” and based on previous
questions one assumes that you understand the meaning of pro and eu, define the terms
“prokaryotic” and “eukaryotic”
4. What does the prefix “uni” means? What does the prefix “multi” means. Understanding the
meaning of both prefixes, what does the term unicellular and multicellular mean?
5. Summarize all your knowledge on the following table. Name the three domains, determine the
type of cell and if these organisms are multi or unicellular. How can you tell them apart?
Name of domain
Type of cell
Multicellular or Unicellular
The Domain Eukarya.
The domain Eukarya contains four kingdoms. Using terms that you have learned before,
unicellular and multicellular and autotroph and heterotroph, classify and give examples of each
of the kingdoms.

Name the major groups of plants and then name two (specific) human uses in the American culture
and in a culture other than your own

Looking at the concept of species
1. Define Species
2. Brassica oleracea (below) has many forms. Are these different species or a single species with
multiple variations? Explain why or why not. Based on your observations would you say that these
different varieties of Brassicaceae could interbreed?
