Layers of the Earth Model
Scientists have developed a layered model of the Earth’s structure using seismic wave data, the Earth’s gravity,
magma analysis and other sources. In this activity you will make a scale model of the Earth’s interior.
1.
Make the following data table on a sheet of your own paper.

Using page 374 in the blue book as a source, write some comments about each layer of the Earth in the
“Comments” column of your table.
Assume that the diameter of the Earth is 12,500 km. Make a scale model of the Earth’s layers that has a
diameter of 18 cm on a sheet of white paper. Use a compass to make the circles that represent thee
layers. Write the scale of your model on the model. Now fill in column 3 in your table.
Color and label the layers.
Write a four-sentence conclusion for the activity in which you describe what your model teachers you
about the structure of the Earth.
