I. Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures
A. Elements: What are smallest pieces (that keep the properties of that element) called?
Approximately how many are there? What is an example? What’s a good definition?
B. Compounds: How different from elements and mixtures? What are the smallest pieces of
compounds called? What are some examples?
C. Mixtures: How different from elements and compounds? What is the difference between
heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures? What are examples of each?
II. The Periodic Table
A. Atomic Structure: What are the differences between protons, neutrons, and electrons
(location, mass, charge, etc)? Which ones determine atomic number? Atomic mass? Charge
of ions?
B. History: Who discovered and when (approximately)? Why was it so important?
C. Shape of the Table: What are rows called and why are some shorter than others? What are
columns called and why are they important?
D. Trends: Where are the largest elements found? The heaviest? The most reactive? The least
reactive?
E. Metals/Nonmetals/Metalloids: What are the characteristics of metals? Where are they found
on the table? What makes metalloids unique? Where are they found? Are there more of one
than the other?
F. Solids/Liquids/Gases: Where are most gases found on the table? What are the only two
liquids (at 72 degrees Fahrenheit)?
G. Groups: What are the common qualities of the alkali metals? The alkaline earth metals? The
transition metals? The halogens? The noble gases? Where is each found on the table?
H. Compounds: How do metals and nonmetals pair up to form compounds? What are the
chemical formulas for some common ones (water, bleach, ammonia, salt, carbon dioxide,
baking soda)?
III. Chemical Reactions
A. Physical vs. Chemical: What is the difference between physical and chemical properties?
What are some examples of each? What is the difference between physical and chemical
changes?
B. Signs of a Reaction: What are four signs of a chemical reaction? What is the difference
