All must identify language devices in a given
extract from Othello.
Most should explore the effect of language
devices in preparation for their controlled
assessment.
Shakespeare uses repetition to present Iago’s sense of selfimportance. We can see this in the opening line of Iago’s first
soliloquy:
‘Thus do I ever make my fool my purse,’
Here, we can see the repetition of Iago’s reference to himself
in the words ‘I’ and ‘my’. Iago is consumed with his own
thoughts.
Not only has Shakespeare used iambic pentameter, to signify
that Iago is speaking from his heart, but he has also framed
the line with sibilance; this repeated and elongated ‘S’ sound
further serves to re-enforce Iago’s snake like nature.

How Does Shakespeare use Language Devices to Present Iago’s Devious Nature?
He holds me well;
The better shall my purpose work on him.
Cassio's a proper man: let me see now:
To get his place and to plume up my will
In double knavery--How, how? Let's see:-After some time, to abuse Othello's ear
That he is too familiar with his wife.
He hath a person and a smooth dispose
To be suspected, framed to make women false.
The Moor is of a free and open nature,
That thinks men honest that but seem to be so,
And will as tenderly be led by the nose
As asses are.
I have't. It is engender'd. Hell and night
Must bring this monstrous birth to the world's light.

we learn about Iago.

This quotation is taken from Act 1, Scene 3, where Iago has
just told Roderigo to repeatedly ‘fill thy purse’ so that he may
woo Desdemona and Cuckold Othello. When Iago is alone,
he reveals his true thoughts in his soliloquy.
In your groups, you are to read the extract of speech and
annotate use of language devices. How has language been
used to focus our attention on Iago’s fiendish plan?
Don’t forget: these words were intended to be performed –
what might the pauses in speech help to show?
