What are the characteristics of standard normal distribution? The HR department of an
organization collects data on employees’ age, salary, level of education, gender, and
ethnicity. Which data do you think is more likely to follow normal distribution? Explain
why.
The standard normal distribution has a symmetrical (bell shaped curve on a graph) characteristic
that result from the calculation of the standard normal value. This means that half of the data
should be less than the mean and the other half should be more than the mean.
(x[value of an observation] – μ [mean distribution])/ σ[standard deviation] = Z [ difference in
deviation in mean distribution]
Or
(x – μ)/ σ= Z
Well an employees’ age, salary, level of education, gender, and ethnicity could follow normal
distribution depending on the situation and approach taken. The normal distribution of age and
salary would be the easiest see with a smaller set of data. It is just a matter of finding the mean
or median of the data set. Unfortunately it is not so easy for the rest of the listed traits. Gender
and ethnicity could be viewed at a per store level, which could be used to find the median
involving the counts from all the stores in the company. The level of education would be the
trickiest as code would have to be applied to each level of education. This could lead to a flawed
interpretation if makes distinctions between colleges.
