GENETICS
You are starting a guinea pig breeding business. You read an article that said rough-coated
guinea pigs cost four times more than smooth-coated guinea pigs. A rough-coat is one in which
the fur goes in all different directions and doesn’t lay flat. The guinea pig looks like it always
has bedhead. A rough-coat on your breed of guinea pig is recessive. Your guinea pig Scruffy
has a gorgeous rough-coat. Scruffy is homozygous recessive for fur texture (rr). You have
been offered two guinea pigs as a mate. Cletus (Guinea pig A) has RR as his genotype, while
Rory (Guinea pig B) has Rr as his genotype. Both are smooth-coated guinea pigs.
Explain which mate you would choose for Scruffy and why. You will do this by
• Creating a Punnett square for each of the possible mates.
• Describing the possible offspring’s phenotypes.
• Choosing the mate that will make the most money and use the evidence from your
Punnett squares to justify your answer.
