Mobility or security, digitization or climate
change – as diverse as the challenges of
our times are, they have one thing in
common: all call for innovative solutions.
People, too, are needed who single-mindedly
seek new possibilities within their areas of
influence. And who do not give up until they
have grasped the situation and found
ground-breaking solutions.

Kistler develops technologies for a world
full of potential. New comprehensive
services bring the company very close to
its customers to capitalize on the benefits
of networked digitized production
(Industry 4.0), to forge ahead with
the development of greener vehicles that
enhance road safety. And to plumb the
ocean's depths for answers to the urgent
questions in climate research.

Direct path to test results
Crash tests play a major role in making car traffic safer and
drastically reducing the number of injured occupants. Kistler
contributes substantially with its innovative measurement
solutions. Our DTI (Digital Transducer Interface) technology,
which is deployed as standard in crash tests worldwide, ensures
swift and efficient test setup and maximum process reliability –
thus achieving totally dependable measurement data for the
development of safer vehicles.
Our measurement solutions enable the intuitive setup of a
perfectly coordinated measuring chain, allowing our customers
to perform more tests in less time with maximum reliability. Only
one cable is needed to configure sensors, transmit and synchronize
measurement data and supply power. Automatic sensor detection
makes configuration even easier, while the installation position,
calibration values and relevant physical variables are automatically
detected by Kistler measurement software. DTI technology is
now also used in vehicle dynamics and operational stability tests.

Industry 4.0 starts with us
Ground-breaking production within the context of Industry 4.0
starts with data acquisition and can be roughly divided into three
stages: Smart Machine, Smart Production and Smart Services.
Kistler technologies cover all three stages.
In injection molding production, for instance, Kistler sensors built
into the tool enable process monitoring, transparency and thus
greater controlling efficiency (Smart Machine). By converging
captured data in a virtual production environment, Kistler is not
only capable of monitoring individual injection molding machines,
but can also network and manage production across several sites
(Smart Production). Finally, Smart Services – controlling all production
data in the cloud – may still be a long way off in most cases. Yet
Kistler already possesses the relevant mature technologies. If the
benefits of a worldwide networked production surmount current
data protection guidelines and the fears that exist in connection
with this issue, in the future production managers will be notified
immediately via app or email in the event of process fluctuations
or a rise in spoilage rates and will be able to take direct action.
' As new Head of the Industrial Process
Control Division, I personally, and our
customers, devote all our energies to
getting the most out of Industry 4.0.
Mature technologies network all stages
of industrial production so that they can
be controlled across several sites. '

Precise data for
climate research
Measuring the oceans
' With their outstanding measuring
accuracy, Kistler sensors lay the
foundation for measuring the world's
oceans. Kistler thus actively helps in
improving our understanding of the
ocean ecosystem. '
As an ecosystem, the ocean plays a key role in the Earth's climate
balance. As part of the international 'Argo' research project, around
the globe automated measuring robots at a depth of around
2 000 meters furnish us with an up-to-date picture of key ocean
characteristics like temperature and salinity. The robots have various
high-tech sensors on board, including Kistler pressure sensors for
determining operating depth. These sensors offer high measurement
accuracy, exceptional long-term stability and high resistance to
corrosion from seawater. Thanks to their exceptional quality and
resilience, Kistler pressure sensors aid in establishing a sound data
basis for climate research and thus a better understanding of
global warming.
In 2017, the researchers aim to delve even deeper, down to
7 000 meters, to trawl more valuable data from the ocean in
the 'Deep Argo' follow-up project. Kistler pressure sensors can
withstand enormous pressure under water and will be used
again for this purpose.
