Introduction
What This Book Contains
In our increasingly technological world,
mathematics is becoming more important
than ever. While much of the emphasis on
math instruction these days is on higher-level
skills, the basics are still crucial. After all,
without an understanding of the basics, there
can be little development of high-level
concepts and skills. Along with the basic
operations, mastery of fractions, decimals,
and percents is essential to achieving success
with advanced math.
The purpose of Practice, Practice, Practice!
Fractions & Decimals is threefold:
• To provide students with skills-based
reproducible activities that will help them
to master fractions, decimals, and percents.
• To provide students with activities that
adhere to the standards of the NCTM and
that serve as a springboard to mastery of
higher-level skills.
• To provide students with activities that are
motivating, challenging, and fun.

Most hailstones are the size of small pebbles. On
September 3, 1970, though, a hailstone measuring

Monster Hailstone
This book contains 52 reproducible activities
that focus on fractions, decimals, and
percents. The activities, which address a
broad range of skills, progress from basic to
challenging and are designed to meet the
needs of math students in grades 4 through
8. The book begins with equivalent fractions
and continues through percents. Several
activities include word problems.
All of the activities are self-correcting.
Students are presented with a question at the
beginning of the activity, which they can
answer by correctly solving the problems of
the activity. For most of the activities, a few
problems that do not help to answer the
questions are included as a means of making
the activities more challenging. The questions
that begin the activities are derived from
various subjects, including geography, history,
science, ecology, and pop culture. Many of
the questions have a touch of trivia about
them, which, we have found over the years,
students enjoy. All of the questions are based
on fact.
An answer key is included at the end of
the book. It shows the answer to each
problem as well as the answers to the
puzzles.

How to Use This Book
Each activity in this book stands alone and
may be used in a manner that best satisfies
the needs of your students. You may use the
activities in various ways: to supplement your
instruction, for reinforcement, for extra credit,
for challenges, or for substitute plans.
The activities are designed for easy
implementation. Each is reproducible, has
easy-to-follow instructions, and requires no
additional materials. You may encourage
students to use calculators for computation,
or you may instruct them to work the
problems out for practice.
While the titles of the activities are related
to the questions, each activity includes the
specific skill(s) the activity addresses at the
top of the page. These skills are also included
in the table of contents beneath the title.
Thus, the contents functions as a skills list,
making it easy for you to identify activities
that will be of most benefit to your students.

Connections to the NCTM
Standards
All of the activities in this book align with the
NCTM’s Principles and Standards for school
mathematics. The activities concentrate on
using fractions, decimals, and percents to
represent numbers, and encourage students
to recognize the relationships between these
numbers. The activities are designed to
promote the development of computational
skills, mathematical reasoning, and
estimation. The interpretation of fractions,
decimals, and percents in problem solving is
fostered throughout the book.
