Prof. Daniel Bass
Fall 2006
Second Essay Assignment
This five-page essay will describe your visit to a South Asian religious institution in
South Florida. You should attend religious services of a religious tradition to which you do not
belong. A list of possible sites is below. Be sure to contact the institution first (by e-mail, phone
or via the web) to verify its location and worship schedule, since some of these listings may be
out of date. You should also inquire if special dress is required, and if you can meet and talk to
this contact person. If you find a problem with any of this listings, please let the professor know,
so that he can change this list for future class. If you want to write about a site not listed, you
must clear it with the professor beforehand.
You should attend religious services at the site, either daily, weekly, monthly or annual
ceremonies. Be sure to discuss the type of ceremonies that you witness in your essay. If
possible, you should talk to participants, including officials and audience, and gather any
literature that they may have about the site and their tradition. If you want to take pictures, to aid
in your memory for writing this essay, be sure to ask permission first. You do not need to
include pictures in your essay, but if you do, they should be in addition to your five page text.
You should introduce yourself as a student at FIU, and hopefully people will be welcoming.
In your essay, you should describe the site, the people present, and the various rituals and
religious actions that you witnessed. In doing so, you should compare them to class materials.
How are they similar to and different from the religious beliefs and practices we have discussed
in class? Additionally, how has the religion adapted to America? Remember, these are not
South Asian religious sites you are visiting, but South Asian American ones. In your essay, you
should address the composition of the audience at the site. Why is this site in South Florida?
Who is it serving? You should describe the art, symbols, images, religious objects, dress, and
language that are distinctive of the religion.
Be sure to provide citations from class readings in your essay. In constructing your essay
do not just give an anecdotal account of your experiences. You should present the relevant parts
of your site visit into a cohesive argument about the religious site and the religious tradition, with
1
sufficient analysis of your experiences. In your conclusion, you may also discuss what was
surprising, unexpected, moving, strange or attractive about your experience, though you should
be as objective as possible in the bulk of the essay.
On a separate title page (that does not count towards your five page essay), you must list:
ƒ
your name
ƒ
name of the site visited
ƒ
religion of the site (including branch or sect if applicable)
ƒ
address and contact information (phone, email) for the site
ƒ
date and time of your visit
ƒ
names of any staff or officials at the site with whom you communicated
This essay should be typed, double-spaced, stapled, in a standard 12-point font (Times or
Times New Roman), with standard margins (maximum 1.25 inches), and with proper citations,
such as parenthetical notations, i.e. (Embree 1988: 5) (for more information on citations see
http://www.wisc.edu/writing/Handbook/DocMLA.html). Although I will not be grading
specifically for grammar, poor grammar will get in the way of your argument and possibly lower
your grade. No outside reading, besides class assignments, is necessary for this essay. You
should revise your essays before turning them in. I will not allow you to do so afterwards.
Plagiarism and academic dishonesty will not be tolerated (For advice on avoiding plagiarism, see
http://library.fiu.edu/Services/Plagiarism.aspx). This essay will count towards 20% of your final
grade. The essay is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday December 6. No late papers
will be accepted.
