Appliances
Improper storage and disposal of waste appliances and their components can have
negative effects on human health and the environment. The wastes found in
appliances can be toxic to humans, sometimes causing serious health complications
for you, your employees, and your families. The ground, air, and water that we all
depend on and appreciate in Minnesota can also be impacted by these wastes. For
more information on appliances visit the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency

Reduce: Consider buying energy efficient and water-saving appliances. Look for
the Energy Star Saving symbol when purchasing new appliances. Use your
dishwasher and washing machine when they are full.
Reuse: Consider donating working appliances to local organizations such as
Habitat for Humanity. Sell working appliances at garage sales or online.
Repair: Repair appliances if it is cost effective. Older appliances
may be too inefficient to repair and cost money in the long run. Use
the Energy Star Savings Calculator to find how much money you can
save by buying energy efficient and water-saving appliances.
Recycle: When disposing of refrigerators or freezers, make sure that
the doors cannot close or remove the door. Appliances can be
dropped off at a transfer station for a fee. For more information see
the current fee schedule, transfer station location maps, and transfer station hours.
Check your local scrap metal dealers for more information.
