Sine, Cosine, and Tangent Ratios
(Pages 477– 481)
Trigonometry is the study of triangle measurement. The ratios of the
measures of the sides of a right triangle are called trigonometric ratios.
Three common trigonometric ratios are defined below.
If ABC is a right triangle and A is an acute angle,
measure of the leg opposite A
measure of the hypotenuse
measure of the leg adjacent to A
cosine of A measure of the hypotenuse
measure of the leg opposite A
tangent of A measure of the leg adjacent to A
Symbols: sin A a, cos A b, tan A a

b. Use a calculator to find the measure
of A given that sin A 0.7071.
4
Enter 0.7071 and the press the sin1 key (you may
have to press INV or 2nd and then the sin key to get
sin1) The calculator should then display 44.999451.
Rounded to the nearest degree, the measure of A
is 45°.
