About Music in Norwich
Note from the Editor
This programme is the result of a collaboration between
a number of organisations who promote classical, jazz
and world music. The aim is to gather music listings in
one place so that they are easy to find and also to offer
an overview of performances throughout the year. The
Music in Norwich group is a self-supporting partnership
of music organisations that are active and promoting
music in Norwich and the surrounding area.
Once again, there is a broad and wideranging offer of music in Norwich with
some fantastic highlights.
Probably the major event for 2016
is a blockbuster at the Norfolk
Showground Arena – Norwich Philharmonic is celebrating
its 175th anniversary year in 2016 - and is performing
Mahler’s Symphony of A Thousand – a huge production
with a vast orchestra and choirs from around Norfolk as
part of the Norfolk & Norwich Festival. So Mahler fan or
not, this is a spectacle not to be missed (see page 27).
The excellent Norwich Baroque is also celebrating a
birthday - 10 years since they started - and will be
offering birthday cake at their concert on Friday 22 July.
Britten Sinfonia is performing regularly at St. Andrew’s
Hall with a series of lunchtime concerts including the
Britten Academy and Benjamin Grosvenor in the evening,
plus Ian Bostridge at Theatre Royal Norwich.
The Michael Badminton Young Musicians Trust offers
support for promising young musicians so if you or
someone you know could benefit from this please see the
details on page 7.
The Shift is pleased to continue supporting Sistema in
Norwich - it is the Lord Mayor and Sheriff’s Civic Charity
until May and we need to make sure that the fundraising
effort continues so that they can keep developing the lives
of young people through music. Please support - see page
43. I hope that you enjoy the Spring/Summer season!
We hope you will keep this booklet safe as it covers six
months’ programming. Because of space limitations and
lots going on, concert details are brief but you can find
out more from individual organisations’ websites.
See page 47 for venue and contact details and also
where to buy tickets.
Please also visit our website www.musicinnorwich.org.uk
where you can download a pdf of this programme and
find out more about Music in Norwich partners. Sign up
to the blog for music updates and extra events.
Important: All information is subject to change - please
check with individual organisations or venues before
travelling to an event. EOIE

Schumann’s ever-popular Piano Quartet.
Britten Sinfonia
Britten Sinfonia is one of the world’s most celebrated
and pioneering ensembles. The orchestra is acclaimed
for its virtuoso musicianship and an inspired approach
to concert programming. Britten Sinfonia breaks the
mould by not having a principal conductor or director,

international guest artists from across the musical spectrum.

LOVERS’ BAROQUE
Formed in 2006, Norwich Baroque specialises in fresh
and vibrant period instrument performance of music by
popular and less well known baroque composers– from
Handel, Bach and Vivaldi to Avison, Hellendaal and Mudge.
The next in our live programme notes series, this concert
features engaging Norwich-born musicologist, Dr Simon
Heighes, who will bring alive the music as he sets it in
context socially, historically and artistically. With our
two ‘lovers’, Jayne May-Sysum (soprano) and Daniel
Bartlette (tenor), plus Norwich Baroque’s charismatic
director, Jim O’Toole, and a huge selection of music to
choose from, the ingredients are there for an evening of
passion and drama!
Norwich Baroque
Performing with eminent soloists from the early music
world our concerts have grown increasingly popular
establishing a niche for Norwich Baroque in the cultural
life of the region. In this, our 10th anniversary year,
we have a particularly exciting programme of concerts
planned – we will be sharing our 10th birthday with you
(July 22/23rd) and in September we will be joined by
violinist Adrian Chandler of La Serenissima as soloist for
Vivaldi’s Four Seasons (Sept 10th). If you are looking for
something different, then try our live programme notes

NORWICH PHILHARMONIC
ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS
175th ANNIVERSARY SEASON 2015-16
MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO. 8 IN E FLAT
THE SYMPHONY OF A THOUSAND
With a full-size symphony orchestra and a mixed
chorus of some 120 voices, the Society performs a wide
repertoire of largescale works, joined by guest soloists
of the highest calibre.
‘The Phil’ usually performs at St. Andrew’s Hall and gives
four concerts of choral and/or orchestral music each
season, plus a very popular Family Christmas Concert.
Phil concerts have been selling out so buy a season ticket
to make sure you don’t miss any of our performances!
The Symphony of a Thousand is so-called because it is
scored for a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, organ, offstage band and 8 solo singers. Indeed it is conceived on
such a large scale that the Royal Norfolk Showground
Arena is the only venue big enough to stage it, the first
time an event of this kind has been held there.
In addition to the musicians and singers of the Norwich
Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the concert will
involve musicians from other local orchestras, notably the
Academy of St Thomas, and singers from the following
Norfolk-based choirs (overleaf):
Norwich Philharmonic Society
The Norwich Philharmonic Society celebrates its
175th anniversary this year. Established in 1841, it has
remained at the heart of the city’s musical life ever since.
In this special anniversary year Norwich Phil presents
an additional concert as part of the Norfolk & Norwich
Festival at the Norfolk Showground - a performance of
the monumental 8th Symphony by Mahler, The Symphony
of a Thousand, for an audience of 2,000 at the Royal
Norfolk Showground Arena, as part of the Norfolk &

‘My most memorable experience was performing
Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in 2010. It was such a thrill
to be part of an enormous orchestra creating the huge
sound of that wonderful music. The 8th Symphony is
composed on an even bigger scale and it has taken the
Society over 2 years of planning and fund-raising to
bring it to a Norfolk audience for our big anniversary
year. It promises to be another unforgettable
experience!’ MIchael Nutt, horn player, Norwich Phil

Cathedral of St John the Baptist
The Cathedral, located on the junction Unthank Road and
Earlham Road, was built between 1882 and 1910 to designs
by George Gilbert Scott, Jr. as a parish church dedicated
to John the Baptist, on the site of the Norwich City Gaol.
Funds for its construction were provided by Henry FitzalanHoward, 15th Duke of Norfolk as a generous gift to the
Catholics of Norwich and a sign of thanksgiving for his first
marriage to Lady Flora Abney-Hastings.

Sistema in Norwich
Sistema in Norwich asks you
to Sponsor an Orchestra
We are seeking sponsors, business or
individual, for our orchestras, to support
their development and to enable more
schools to be part of Sistema in Norwich.
We currently run four primary schoolbased orchestras (Catton Grove, Lakenham,
Larkman and Wensum areas) and three
cross-programme orchestras.
Businesses or individuals can sponsor any
of these or help develop a new orchestra in
an area of deprivation and there is a sliding
scale of sponsorship levels and benefits.
Sistema is a global movement and highprofile across the UK and Europe as well as

“Sistema in Norwich is
an amazing charity that
helps young musicians play
instruments. It’s not just
about music. It is about
being together and we are
like one big family that cares
and helps each other out
when needed.
I have been in Sistema for
5 or 6 years now and it has
changed my life.
You get to meet new people
and make friends. Being part
of Sistema was the best
decision I ever made.”

is a ground-breaking, intensive programme,
run by NORCA, which transforms the lives of
young people through music, by learning an
instrument in small groups and playing
together in an orchestra right from the start.
It is based on the successful Venezuelan
‘El Sistema’ which is recognised internationally.
Sistema in Norwich currently works in the
Larkman, Lakenham and Catton Grove areas of
Norwich and we want to expand and grow.
You can help us to develop the programme
and involve more children by donating (and
including gift aid):
• Take a Seat – sponsor a place for a year in
one of our orchestras for £50 a month or
£600 annual donation.
• Make an Ensemble – support a small
ensemble for £30 a month or £360 annually
• Give a Lesson – provide a group lesson for
a child for a year – £15 a month or £180 pa

Useful information for visitors to
Norwich
Norwich is a medieval city, with Saxon, Viking and
Norman roots with a later Dutch and Flemish influence.
It is a very European city and is over 900 years old.
It retains its tight boundary and much of the city walls
and street pattern, making it a compact and easy city
centre to explore on foot.
Contemporary Norwich is very vibrant with a lot of
investment in the culture of the city - it is England’s
first UNESCO City of Literature as well as having a
thriving visual art, theatre and music ecosystem.
Visitors should not miss the vibe of Norwich Lanes, full
of independent shops, bars and cafés from Lower Goat
Lane to St Benedicts, Bedford Street to Elm Hill.
Tourist information is in The Forum, the large glass
building not far from the Norwich Market. The market
itself is a marvel of Norwich culture – explore it,
you will be amazed. Mainstream shopping is in the
two Malls, Chapelfield and Castle (tucked under the
Castle) and the ‘alternative’ areas are north of the city,
Magdalen and St Augustines’ Street (sometimes called
Over the Water) packed full of ethnic shops, artists
studios, antiques and collectibles and makespaces.
If you spend any time in Norwich you will no doubt notice
the number of flint churches, many of which are turned over
to arts uses including Norwich Arts Centre, St Margarets and
Norwich Puppet Theatre. Norwich has a fantastic built heritage
including two cathedrals - you can’t help but fall over it but
www.heritagecity.org.will guide your way.
Visit Norwich has all the information you need including a free
city map. Norwich BID has invested in a Discover Norwich app
which you can download from www.norwichbid.co.uk, plus city
centre free wifi to help you get about easily.
There’s a thriving café culture and so here are some places to eat
and drink (we have not been paid to recommend them!) - we will
leave you to Google them for exact locations:
Norwich Lanes: The Birdcage, Grosvenor Fish Bar (it’s famous!),
The Bicycle Shop, Frank’s Bar, Finnies’ Juice Bar, The Library
(in an old library), Biddy’s Tea Room, Moorish Falafel, Paolo’s
Pizzas, Clark & Ravenscroft, The Alley
Anywhere in St Benedicts’ Street. Olive’s and The Britons’
Arms in Elm Hill. North and Dandy Horse in Magdalen Street
Exchange Street: Captain America, East 26, Wallow, Cote
Brasserie, Dray Yard Smokehouse, Cafe No. 33 (amazing cakes).
St George’s Street: Norwich Playhouse Bar just can’t be beat it’s an art installation in its own right, Amaretto, Expresso
Best coffee – Strangers in Dove Street and Pottergate or
Expresso in St Andrew’s Plain are both excellent but there are
many, many great independents - just explore!
