CH 32  PERCENT APPS II
1.
The sales tax rate is 7%. Find the sales tax on a $45.00 item.
We need to calculate 7% of $45.00. Since “of” means multiply, this
translates to 0.07  45, which equals 3.15, and so the tax is $3.15.
2.
Find the total cost of the item in the previous problem.
Just add the tax, $3.15, to the price of the item, $45.00, to get a
total cost of $48.15.
3.
Find the sales tax (assuming 7 3 % ) on a $150 TiVo.
4
We need to find 7 3 % of $150. This is done by multiplying 0.0775
4
by $150, giving a product of $11.625, which rounds to $11.63.
4.
Jim’s salary of $1,275 was cut 20% and later increased by 20%. Find Jim’s
new salary.
To reduce $1,275 by 20%, we calculate 20% of $1,275 and then
subtract it from the $1,275:
20% of $1,275 = 0.2  1,275 = 255. And $1,275  $255 = $1,020.
Now, to increase the $1,020 salary by 20%, we calculate 20% of
$1,020 and then add it to $1,020:
20% of $1,020 = 0.2  1,020 = 204. And $1,020 + $204 =
$1,224.00
* Notice that the final salary is not the same as the original salary.

Find the total cost to carpet a 19-ft by 20-ft room if the carpet costs $30.00
per square yard. Include 10% for installation.
First, we find the area of the room in square feet:
19 ft  20 ft = 380 sq ft
(which can written ft 2 )
Second, convert the square feet to
square yards by dividing 380 sq ft
by 9 sq ft per sq yd:
380  9 = 42.2 sq yd (or yd 2 )
Assuming that carpet is sold only by the whole yard, we need to
round the 42.2 yd 2 UP to 43 yd 2 (since rounding down would leave
a hole somewhere in the carpet). So, 43 yd 2 at $30.00/ yd 2 is a total
of $1,290 for the materials (the carpet). The labor is 10% of $1,290,
or 0.1  $1,290 = $129. The grand total is therefore $1,290 + $129
= 1,419.00.
6.
A tole painter pays $85 for the wood, paints the piece, and then
quadruples the cost of the wood to determine the selling price. If the tole
painter gets 75% of the selling price, find the net profit for the tole painter.
Since the selling price is 4 times the cost of the wood, the selling
price is $85  4 = $340. Since the tole painter gets 75% of the
selling price, we calculate 75% of $340, or 0.75  $340 = $255.
Although this may be the amount of the check that the painter
receives from the seller, it is not the net profit.
Taking into account the cost of the wood, the net
profit for the painter is $170.

Anything over 40 hours is time-and-a-half. Find the take-home (net) pay
for 48 hours of work at $15.00 per hour. Include a 6% deduction for Social
Security.
Since we worked over 40 hours, the time-and-a-half will kick in for
all hours in excess of 40. Let’s first
calculate the hourly overtime rate. The
Time-and-a-half can be
easiest way is to multiply $15.00 by 1.5 to
thought of as regular pay
get $22.50 per hour. Notice also that
plus half of regular pay.
there were 8 overtime hours (48  40).
Here’s the setup:
40 hrs @ $15.00/hr = $600.00
8 hrs @ $22.50/hr
= $180.00
$780.00
(gross pay before deductions)
Now for the 6% Social Security deduction: 6% of $780 = 0.06  780
= $46.80. Finally, subtracting the deduction of $46.80 from the
gross pay of $780.00 gives 780.00  46.80 = $733.20.
