Assess causes, effects and perceptions
of conflicts between groups of people





Read the information on page 291 in your
textbook about the “Crusades.”
Answer the following questions:
1. What were the Crusades?
2. Which religious groups were involved?
3. Who was being attacked and why?



Definition: The deliberate and systematic
destruction, in whole or in part, of an ethnic,
racial, religious or national group.
Examples in History: The Holocaust, Rwanda,
Darfur conflict and Cambodia “Killing Fields.”
In each case a group of people were purposely
being exterminated (killed) because of their
ethnicity, their race, their beliefs or their
political loyalty.





Who – Nazi Germans and Jews/other
“undesirables.”
What – Jews and others were separated from
society and eventually exterminated.
Where – Germany and parts of Europe
When – 1930’s and 40’s
Why - Adolf Hitler wanted to create a superior
race.





Who – Government of Cambodia vs. Citizens
What – Citizens were killed by the
government.
Where – Cambodia (Southeast Asia)
When – Late 1970’s
Why - Cambodia’s leader wanted to transform
back to an agrarian society where no one was
educated or questioned government authority.





Who – Hutus and the Tutsis (ethnic groups)
What – Tutsis were being slaughtered by the
Hutus.
Where – Rwanda (central Africa)
When – 1994
Why – Back during Belgium colonization of
central Africa the Tutsis were favored by the
Belgium government. Once the Belgians left,
the Hutus took their revenge.





Who – Northern Africans/Muslims and the
Black Africans/Christians. (ethnicity and
religion)
What – Northern Africans/Muslims were
killing the Black Africans/Christians.
Where – Sudan (northeast Africa)
When – 2003
