System
Achondroplasia
• A genetic disease that
causes dwarfism by
altering the ossification
process
Gout
An accumulation of
Uric Acid within
joints. Treated with
anti-inflammatory
drugs.
Osteoarthritis
• An inflammation of the
bone tissue within the
joints. Can be caused by
injury or degeneration.
Treated with antiinflammatory drugs,
surgery and joint
replacement.
Rickets
• Vitamin D
deficiency which
prevents calcium
absorption. In
children, it
causes bowed
legs and soft
skulls. Treated
with vitamin
supplements
Osteomyelitis
• A bone infection most often cause by a staph
bacterium. Treated with antibiotics.
Osteoporosis
• Decrease in total bone
mass usually found in
elderly women. Increased
fractures and poor
posture result and can be
treated with vitamin D
and calcium supplements
and estrogen therapy.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
• An autoimmune disease that attacks the
synovial tissue and replaces it with bone.
