Energy Transformation in Electrical Circuits
E.Q. - How are the different types of energies transformed in
electrical circuits?
An Electrical Circuit:
1. A source of electricity conducted
in a wire.
2. The WIRE is a conductor and
carries an electrical current.
3. There must be a device that
transforms electrical energy. Ex:
Light bulb or Radio.
E.Q. - How are the different types of energies transformed in
electrical circuits?
4. Must be connected in a complete
path for transformation to occur.
5. A Switch controls the flow of
electricity.
• Open circuit = electricity will
not flow (light is off)
• Closed circuit = electricity
will flow (light is on)
E.Q. - How are the different types of energies transformed in
electrical circuits?
Sources of Electricity in a circuit:
1. Batteries (stored chemical energy)
2. Solar Cell (light from the sun)
3. Wall Outlets - this energy comes
from generators in power plants.
Ex:
• Burning fuels (chemical)
• Hydroelectric (mechanical )
E.Q. - How are the different types of energies transformed in
electrical circuits?
Electrical Energy transformed to
light, sound, heat & mechanical
motion in a circuit.
1. Light:
– Electrical  Light in a circuit
– Chemical  electrical Light
• Light bulb added to circuit
2. Sound:
– Electrical  Sound
• Door bell, buzzer, radio, TV
E.Q. - How are the different types of energies transformed in
electrical circuits?
3. Heat:
– Electrical  Heat
• Toaster, stove, or heater
4. Mechanical Motion:
– Electrical  Mechanical Motion
• Electric motor
