He appeared in over 60 films throughout his career. While in Hollywood, Reagan served as an FBI informant who gave up the names of suspected communist sympathizers. The Politician In 1964, Reagan publicly endorsed Republican Barry Goldwater for President. He would go on to become California Governor for two terms. In 1968 and 1976, Reagan unsuccessfully ran for nomination of the Republican presidential candidate, narrowly losing in 1976 to President Ford. 1980 Campaign Reagan returned in 1980 with the promise of lower taxes, less government interference in people's lives, states' rights, and a strong national defense. Results Reagan won the election in a landslide accumulating 489 Electoral College votes and over 50% of the popular vote.
