Sphere
The blackest part of
a shadow, the
region of complete
shadow
Hemisphere
A curved shape that
is wide in the
middle and pointed
at the ends
Equator
When the moon is
three-quarters of
the way through the
month
Axis
Small, rocky body
that orbits the Sun
between Mars and
Jupiter
Rotate
Revolve
Orbit
The partial shadow,
between regions of
complete shadow
and complete
illumination
A short amount of
time when all or
part of the Sun or
the Moon becomes
dark
An object that orbits
a planet
Umbra
The Sun and all the
bodies that revolve
around it including
planets, asteroids,
and comets
Penumbra
The time taken for a
planet to make one
complete orbit
around the Sun
Solar system
The study of objects
in space, such as
planets, moons,
stars
Planet
Ball of ice and dust
orbiting the Sun. It
has a head and a
tail
Moon
Atmosphere
Astronomy
When the moon is a
quarter of the way
through a month
Imaginary line
through the centre of
Earth
Path followed by an
object in space as it
revolves around
another object

Day
A planet’s natural
satellite
Year
A large body of rock
or gas that moves
around a star e.g.
Earth
Tilt
Rock that burns up
as it enters the
Earth’s atmosphere
at high speed
The time taken for a
planet to make one
Phases of the Moon
complete turn on its
axis
Satellite
First quarter
Last quarter
Crescent
A large collection of
stars held together
by gravity
Solid ball or globe
Mixture of gases
surrounding the
Earth (or any other
planet)
A ball of gases in
which nuclear
reactions are
occurring
Constellation
When the moon is
more than half but
less than fully lit up
Star
When something is
moving in a circle
around another
object
Galaxy
Imaginary line that
circles the middle of
Earth dividing it into
the two hemispheres
Meteor
The changing shape
of the moon over a
month as seen from
Earth
Comet
Half of a sphere; the
earth is divided into
the northern
hemisphere and the
southern
hemisphere
Asteroid
An officially
recognised star
pattern e.g. The
Southern Cross
Eclipse
Gibbous

Teacher Notes
Preparing the dominoes cards
1. Print the template onto coloured paper.
2. Laminate and then cut up into individual cards.
3. A class of 30, working in groups of 3, will need 10 sets of cards.
Using the dominoes cards
1. Shuffle the cards.
2. Spread out all 30 cards on the table.
3. Each card is NOT a matching pair in itself. Two other cards can be
placed on either side of it so that the two neighbouring cards make up a
correct statement.
4. Each card fits only in one place and when the group has placed all
cards correctly they will form ONE closed loop.
