Unit 5 Vocabulary
Mexican Independence
• This activity is to be used as a matching game
where the students will explore the vocabulary
terms, definitions and visuals.
• Print out enough cards for your student groups.
• Cut apart the cards and place in a baggie.
• Allow students 10 to 15 minutes to sort the
words, then review with students.
• Students can then decide which words they feel
the least comfortable with and complete a Frayer
model of these words.
Revolution
a forcible overthrow of a government or
social order in favor of a new system.
Dictatorship
government by a single ruler.
Reform
make changes in something with the goal
to improve it.
Factions
a small, organized, rebel group within a
larger one, especially in politics.
Empire
an widespread group of states or countries
under a single ultimate authority. Usually a
Emperor or Empress.
Immigration
the action of coming to live permanently in
a foreign country.
Empresarios
a person who had been granted the right to
settle on land in exchange for recruiting
and taking responsibility for new settlers.
The word is Spanish for entrepreneur.
Settlement
a place where people establish a
community.
Land Grant
a grant of public land to a
organization, or to particular groups
of people.
Independence
the fact or state of being
independent.
Contract
a written or spoken agreement, that is
intended to be enforceable by law.
Allegiance
loyalty or commitment of an individual to a
group or cause.
