Rhizopoda
Amoebas, Actinopods, and
Foraminiferans
• Use pseudopodia (cellular extensions) to
sometimes feed and for movement
• Most are heterotrophs
• Some are symbiotic
• Not much known about their phylogeny
Rhizopods (Amoebas)
•Unicellular
•Use pseudopodia for
movement and to feed
•Reproduce asexually
through different
forms of cell division
•Live in freshwater,
salt water, and soil
Actinopods (Heliozoans and
Radiolarians)
• Use a slender
version of
pseudopodia called
axopodia
• Most Heliozoans
live in fresh water
• Most Radiolarians
live in salt water
heliozoan
radiolarian
Foraminiferans
• Almost all marine
• Named for their
porous shells
• Pseudopodia extend
through pores
• Pseudopodia help
with swimming, shell
formation, and
feeding
