2.5 The Cell Cycle
The steps of Mitosis
Remember the 3 reasons for cell
division?
1) GROWTH
2) REPAIR
3) ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION
The Cell Cycle
Mitosis is a very SMALL but IMPORTANT part of the
cell cycle
See page 40
Mitosis
The stage of the cell cycle in which the
DNA in the nucleus is divided, the first
part of cell division
products of mitosis
Mitosis produces two
daughter cells that are
EXACTLY like the parent
cell.
4 phases of mitosis
P - Prophase
M - Metaphase
A - Anaphase
T - Telophase
Prophase
The 1st phase of mitosis
long strands of DNA condense
to form visible chromosomes
The nuclear membrane
dissolves
metaphase
Spindle fibres form and line
up chromosomes along the
equator of the cell
anaphase
Spindle fibres pull sister
chromatids (each half of
the chromosome) apart at
the centromere (the
middle)
telophase
The final stage of mitosis
The chromosomes unwind
and are no longer visible
Nuclear membrane forms
around each set of daughter
chromosomes
after mitosis
Cytokinesis: the
cytoplasm and all it’s
contents are divided into
the daughter cells
Remember the stages
I - Interesting
P - People
M - Make
A - Annoying
T - Tasks
C - Cool
