DEFINITION

IRONY
Irony is the contrast between what is
expected or what appears to be and what
actually is.
Verbal Irony
The contrast between what is said and what is
actually meant.
Situational Irony
This refers to a happening that is the opposite of
what is expected or intended.
Dramatic Irony
This occurs when the audience or reader knows
more than the characters know.
The really ugly duckling
Poetry – Marianne Moore
I, too, dislike it: there are things that are important beyond all this
fiddle.
Reading it, however, with a perfect contempt for it, one discovers in
it after all, a place for the genuine.
Hands that can grasp, eyes
that can dilate, hair that can rise
if it must, these things are important not because a
high-sounding interpretation can be put upon them but because they are
useful. When they become so derivative as to become unintelligible,
the same thing may be said for all of us, that we
do not admire what
we cannot understand: the bat
holding on upside down or in quest of something to
eat, elephants pushing, a wild horse taking a roll, a tireless wolf under
a tree, the immovable critic twitching his skin like a horse that feels a
flea, the baseball fan, the statistician-nor is it valid
to discriminate against 'business documents and
school-books'; all these phenomena are important. One must make a
distinction
however: when dragged into prominence by half poets, the result is
not poetry,
nor till the poets among us can be
'literalists of
the imagination'--above
insolence and triviality and can present
for inspection, 'imaginary gardens with real toads in them', shall we
have it. In the meantime, if you demand on the one hand,
the raw material of poetry in
all its rawness and
that which is on the other hand
genuine, you are interested in poetry.
Let’s consult an expert on
situational irony
How to Write a Political Poem
However it starts, it's gotta be loud
and then it's gotta get a little bit louder.
But this is how you write a political poem
and how you deliver it with power.
Mix current events with platitudes of empowerment.
Wrap it up in rhyme or rhyme it up in rap until it sounds
cool.
Glare until it sinks in.
Because somewhere in Florida, votes are still being counted.
I said somewhere in Florida, votes are still being counted!
See, that's your Hook, and you gotta have a Hook.
More than the look, it's the hook that is the most important
part.
The hook has to fit and the hook's gotta hit.
Hook's gotta hit hard in the heart.
Because somewhere in Florida, votes are still being counted.
And Dick Cheney is peeing all over himself in spasmodic
glee…See what I did?
Make fun of politicians, it's easy, especially with Republicans
like Rudolph Giuliani, Colin Powell, and . . . Al Gore.
Oooooh See what I did?
I called Al Gore a Republican, that must mean that my
political sensibilities are much more finely tuned than yours
Talk about idiotic juxtapossesions of political personalities
and ideologies
as if communism were the opposite of democracy,
as if we needed Ralph Nader, not Darth Vader
Amazing Grace, how —
Stop in the middle of a song that everyone knows and loves.
This will give your poem a sense of urgency.
Because there is always a sense of urgency in a political
poem.
There is no time to waste!
Corruption doesn't have a curfew,
greed doesn't care what color you are
and the New York City Police Department
is filled with police officers
who carry guns on their hips
and metal badges pinned over their hearts.
R Injustice isn't injustice it's just in us just as injustice is
just in ice.
That's the only alienation of this alien nation
where you either fight for freedom
or else you are free but dumb!
And somewhere in Florida, votes are still being counted.
And it makes me wanna… (3x)
Because I have seen devastation of gentrification
and can talk with great articulation
about cosmic constellations, and atomic radiation.
I've seen D. W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation
but I preferred 101 Dalmations.
Like a cross examination, I will give you the explanation
of why SlamNation is the ultimate manifestation
of poetic ejaculation and egotistical manipulation. And
other words that rhyme with “ation” like Haitian
And this nation
And maybe they are still counting votes somewhere in
Florida,
but by the time you get to the end of the poem that just
doesn’t matter anymore.
Because all you have to do is close your eyes,
lower your voice, and end by saying:
the same line three times,
the same line three times,
the same line three times.
"Ironic"
An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures
A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need
is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
And as the plane crashed down he thought
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
"Well isn't this nice..."
Helping you out
And isn't it ironic... don't you think
It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures
Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face
Isn’t it Ironic..?
Work on a line of Irony

Think of something ironic that
happened in your life, and write a
line of poetry that reflects that idea
for your American Dream poem
