Rational Functions
Did you notice on the directions for PW 11-1 it said
“State any excluded values”?
In the expression x – 2, what would happen if x = 3?
x–3
Therefore x = 3 is an excluded value in the function.
We would state the function as:
x – 2, x ≠ 3

An excluded value in a rational function makes the
function undefined.
State the excluded values in the rational functions:
(a) 7(d2 + 2)

factor the numerator,
then factor the denominator, and
then carry out operations as usual.
