Training Script Trainer1 : Hi, my name is Lou and this is Dori and we’d like to welcome you to our data visualization experiment. Thank you for your participation in this experiment. Before we begin with the training, I’m going to tell you a little bit about the experiment we are conducting, and then have you fill out and sign release papers. What you will be working on is a software database application called InfoZoom. InfoZoom allows you to search through, manipulate and analyze data in a given data set. What you will be given is a set of data, and through InfoZoom, you will search for answers to questions regarding that data set. Once we have finished filling out the paperwork, we will train you and introduce you to some of the functions InfoZoom has. When our tutorial is finished, we will go to the testing room where you will be given the chance to get familiar with InfoZoom an answer a set of training questions. At the end of the training session, the answers to the training questions will be discussed. Once you are familiar with InfoZoom, the test will begin. You will be given half an hour to complete questions within a given data set. Since there are three data sets, expect to be in testing for an hour and a half. You will be given breaks so don’t worry. Once the testing is finished, you will be given a questionnaire to complete and you will receive your handsome reward. Trainer2: Reads from Room 259 handout about documents. Shows consent forms, video release forms, etc. ( Should take about 10-15 minutes ). BEGIN TRAINING INSTRUCTION Slide 1 – Title Page Slide 2 Trainer: InfoZoom is a program that helps you do visual data mining. It achieves this by allowing you to….( trainer can simply read from slide ). Slide 3 – Screen shot of User Interface Trainer: This is what the InfoZoom interface looks like. I’m actually going to open the InfoZoom application right now so that I can refer to it as we go through this presentation. ( Open InfoZoom application and load “dating” data set if not already done so, then demonstrate key features ) Slide 4 Trainer: There are two variables in InfoZoom…( continue reading from slide.) ( Refer to InfoZoom. Show trainees examples of objects and attributes ) Slide 5 Trainer: InfoZoom has three types of presentation styles ( continue reading from slide ). ( Refer to InfoZoom. Display all three types of views to the trainees. ) Slide 6 Trainer: Within each presentation style, there are four important functions…( continue reading from slide ) Slide 7 – Zooming IN/OUT Trainer: Zooming in….Zooming out….( continue reading from slide ). ( Refer to InfoZoom. Show how the display function works by zooming in on a specific attribute. After seeing this, in all three different views ( wide, compressed, and overview ), zoom out to show how the zoom out function works ). Slide 8 - Sorting Trainer: InfoZoom allows you to select an object, and have that object sorted ascending or descending. ( Refer to InfoZoom. Select an object/row and click on the arrow to sort ascending and descending. ) Slide 9 – Graphing Trainer: To help analyze data and compare the attributes of an object, InfoZoom allows you to graph the attributes of the object. ( Read from slide ) ( Refer to InfoZoom. Select object to graph. Show various representations of data …pie chart, bar graph, etc. ) Slide 10 – Domains Trainer: There are three different data sets you will be working with … ( continue to read from slide ). ( Refer to InfoZoom. Starting with the “dating” data, since it is already what we’ve been using, identify the objects and attributes. Then move on to describe the other two data sets. In the “cars” data set, there is an inverse relationship with respect to acceleration. The higher the value, the slower a car accelerates. This should be explicitly discussed during the training session. For the “environment” data set, the X and Y values represent coordinates of particular places in Sweden. Continue along these lines in describing the data set. ) Slide 11 – Dating Question ( Refer to InfoZoom to solve question. Go through process of acquiring the answer to give trainees an idea of how they will be solving such questions. ) Slide 12 – Car Question ( Refer to InfoZoom to solve question. Go through process of acquiring the answer to give trainees an idea of how they will be solving such questions. ) Slide 13 – Environment Question ( Refer to InfoZoom to solve question. Go through process of acquiring the answer to give trainees an idea of how they will be solving such questions. ) Slide 14 – Summary Slide 15 – Final Comments ( Smile and look friendly =)
