+
More Overview

One of Rome’s greatest generals conquering Pannonia,
Dalmatia, Raetia, and temporarily, parts of Germania

Became known as a dark and reclusive emperor with no
desire to be there.

It became worse after the death of his son - he went a little
crazy.

In 26 AD, he sent himself to exile against better judgement.
He wasn’t in the right mind.

Caligula succeded him after his death.
+
Military Victories

He led a sizable force to Armenia but let it be a neutral
province. Then returned home in 19 BC and married Vispania
Agrippina.

He was appointed to the position of praetor and went west to
help his brother.

Tiberius focused on the tribes in the Alps, transalpine Gaul,
and conquered Raetia.

When he returned in 13 BC he was appointed consul and
around that time had his son, Drusus Julius Caesar.
+
Agrippa’s death

After Agrippa’s death, Tiberius and Drusus received more
poor

His dying wish was for Tiberius to divorce his wife, Vispsania,
which is Agrippa’s daughter, and marry Julia the Elder.

Julia the Elder was the daughter of Agustus and wife of
Agrippa.

The new marriage was an unhappy one and they produced
one child.

He saw Vipsania once again and followed her while she was
crying and Augustus caught them and ensured this
encounter would not happen again.
+
Retirement

Left for a campaign against the Marcomanni and when he
returned home he became consul.

Then in 6 BC he retired to Rhodes

This announcement was sudden and believed to be because
of his unhappy marriage with Julia.

This was really upsetting for Augustus because he, 57, had no
one to pass the power to after his death which would end his
succession.
+
Who’s the Heir

Augustus’s sons: Lucius and Gaius

Then Lucius dies in 2 AD making the future emperor Gaius,
his brother, who dies in 4 AD

During this Tiberius returns as a private citizen of Rome and
after the deaths of the heirs.

Augustus adopts Tiberius with the condition that Tiberius
adopts Augustus’s nephew Germanicus

Tiberius then receives Tribunician power as well as part of
Augustus’s power
+
Emporer: Early Reign

Titled princeps on September 18th, 14 AD

He had the power of one just needed the titles

He tried to be like Augustus but he came across derisive and
seemed obstructive to the state.

He disliked being princeps

He refused all titles.

Seemed he wanted the senate to act without him and any
orders he gave were vague.
+
Problems

Legions posted in Pannonia and Gemania didn’t receive
bonuses promised by Augustus.

The soldiers started rebelling.

Tiberius sent his son and Germanicus with a small legion to
settle the uproar.

Germanicus led his rebelled troops into Germanic territory
and told the group any treasure they could grab counted as
their bonus.

Germanicus took over the Teutoburg forest and other parts of
the Germanic region lost years before.
+
Sejanus

He became praetorian perfect due to Tiberius’s lack of
involvement.

After the death of Tiberius’s son , Sejanus became more
popular in Tiberius’s eye

Referred to him as “Socius Laborum” or partner in labor

Sejanus started purge trials of the wealthy and equestrians
who were capable of opposing power.
+
Sejanus’s Plot

Sejanus was 2nd command consul and was jealous

Sejanus tried to marry into the Julian family and win his or
her support.

Any one who stood in the way were tried for treason and
immediately dealt with.

Tiberius figured out the plot and wrote a letter to senate
condemning that Sejanus was trying to over throw him and
he to be immediately executed.
+
Late Years

After Sejanus, Tiberius’s reputation was tarnished in the eye
of the people.

He lost all desire to care for Rome and the senate was the
only thing keeping Rome alive.
+
Death

Tiberius died in Misenum

Death date March 16th, 37 AD

