Notes
• Classification is the grouping of objects or
information based on similarities.
• Taxonomy is the branch of biology that is
concerned with grouping and naming
organisms.
• Aristotle
– Developed the first method of classification
– Classified organisms into two major groups
based on size, structure and location, plants and
animals
Carolus Linnaeus 18th century Swedish biologist (father
of modern taxonomy)
• Developed the method of classification that is used today
• Classified organisms based physical characteristics

– Archaea and Eubacteria – unicellular
