Angiosperms & Gymnosperms
What is a seed???


Seeds are the products of sexual
reproduction in most plants
A seed is a complete reproductive package
that contains an embryo, a food supply,
and a seed coat, which protects it from
drying out
Two major groups of seed-bearing
plants

Angiosperms

Gymnosperms
Angiosperms



are flowering plants
seeds form inside flowers
When mature, the seeds are enclosed in a
case, such as a pod, or shell
Gymnosperms



do not produce flowers
most produce seeds inside cones
Seeds have a coat that protects them from
dehydration, but they are not enclosed in
a case
Sexual Reproduction in
Angiosperms


Over one half of all known plant species
are angiosperms – some are large
producing large showy flowers, some are
tiny and easily overlooked
Regardless of their size, all flowers have
the same function, they contain the plant’s
reproductive organs
