1. GENERAL INFORMATION
 Burundi country is siuated in East Africa Region,






limited by Rwanda at North, Tanzania in the East
and South, RDC in the West.
The territory area : 27 834 km²
Population : 10 millions
University teaching hospitals : 1
Regional hospitals : 5
Healthcare districts hospitals : 45
Healthcare centers : 641
2. HEALTHCARE ENGINEERING SITUATION
 Ministry of Health Department of infrastractures
and equipments (DISE)
At the national level, we have a department in charge of
infrastructure and equipment under the Ministry of
health.
The DISE department, is in charge of medical and hospital
equipments maintenance for the most of public health
infrastructures
Technical staff of DISE : 2 engineers, 4 biomedical
technicians, 3 electrical technicians

• Maintenance staff at district hospital :
Only 13 district hospitals out of 45 count in their
personnel a technician (electrical or mechanical) : 1
technician per hospital.
• Regional hospitals (5) : 3 engineers, 7 technicians
• University hospital : 2 engineers, 3 technicians

Maintenance budget
 It is important to mention here that even if the DISE
department is there, there is no budget line for
maintenance.
 There is no spare parts stock,
 In case of need to replace parts, the district hospital try
to find itself the budget, otherwise, the equipment is
decommissioned.
3. NATIONAL PROJECTS
 Currently there are 2 projects related to medical
equipment at national level.
1. Establishment of the national policy of acquisition,
management and maintenance of healthcare technology in
Burundi
The survey was conducted by Europian Union project
in July 2014 and it supposed that the strategic plan
to implement the policy will start in January 2015

2. PAISS Project, 5th constituent
It’s a 4 years project conducted by BTC which will support
2 health provinces to implement healthcare technology
management in all hospitals and health centers
established in those 2 provinces.
The project will also support and execute the strategic plan
of implementation of the acquisition, management and
maintenance national policy.
The project will start in January 2015.
4. ABIB ROLE AND PROJECTS
 ABIB is the Burundi national association of hospital
and biomedical engineering professionals.
 It was registered recently : May 20th, 2014
 At the moment we count 22 members working in
public institutions as well as private established in
Bujumbura city.
ABIB ROLE AND PROJECTS (cont and the end)
 The main objective of ABIB is to collaborate with DISE and Ministry
of Health to improve the management of healthcare technology at
national level.
 For the year 2015, we plan to participate in execution of the
strategic plan of the maintenance policy
 2 projects are in preparation for 2015 :
1. Organise a national workshop on the topic for though on healthcare
technology management in Burundi
2. Participate at the national medical equipment inventory as a
partner of the Ministry of Health
5. CONCLUSION
 Since 2013, the MoH in collaboration with its technical
partners is trying to improve the medical equipment
management at national level.
 Even if the path is still long, we can mention some
improvements in that field
 But the success of this initiative will be reached by putting
efforts together (MoH, Technical and Financial Partners,
ABIB, etc.)
 We hope that the year 2015 will be decisive to start the
process which will not stop without reach of the objectives
