Physical and Chemical Changes
How do you recognize the difference?
Physical Changes
 The chemical make-up of the matter does not change
 The matter may change state or form but it is still the
same type of matter
 E.g. condensation, sublimation, suspension in liquid,
evaporation, crystallization, solution formed
Chemical Changes
 The chemical make-up of the matter does change
 You cannot change the new matter created from the
chemical reaction back into what was started with
 A new substances if formed after two substances have
reacted with each other
How do you know a chemical reaction
happened?
 New matter formed gets hotter or colder
How do you know a chemical reaction
happened?
 A precipitate (solid) is formed
How do you know a chemical reaction
happened?
 A gas is formed
How do you know a chemical reaction
happened?
 Matter creates light, sound (“pop”), heat or becomes cold
during a reaction
How do you know a chemical reaction
happened?
 The colour of the matter changes
How do you know a chemical
reaction happened?
 An odour is created
