Energy Flow In Ecosystems
Ch. 5 sec. 1
Ultimate source of Energy
 Sun
 Plants use sun and animals rely on plants
 Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae,
and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and
water to produce carbohydrates and oxygen.
Producer
 An organism that makes its own food also known as
autotrophs
Consumer
 Organisms that get their energy by eating other
organisms also known as heterotrophs
 Cellular respiration
What eats what
 Herbivores = plant eaters
Carnivores
 Meat-eaters
Omnivores
 Eat both plants and animals
Decomposers
 Break down dead organisms causing them to rot or
decompose
 Very important to life cycles
Respiration
 Cellular Respiration = breaking down food to produce
energy
Food Chain
 A sequence in which energy is transferred from one
organism to the next
Food Web
 Many of the feeding relationships in an ecosystem
Trophic Levels
 Each step in the transfer of energy through an
ecosystem
 Only 10% of energy is actually transferred
