Geography & Origins
•
The Nile River [Google Earth]
 [Video] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oE2YZZgZWdE
•
Lineage—Egyptian history goes back to the “Hamitic” lineage.
However, the clearest descendent for Egypt’s origins goes to a
man named Mizraim (Gen. 50:11).
•
Menes—Shortly before 3,000 B.C., a man named Menes united
the populations of the “Upper” and “Lower” Nile.
Timeline of Ancient Egypt
•
1- The Old Kingdom (Post-Flood/c. Between 2700 and 2200 B.C.)
•
2- The Middle Kingdom (2100-1640 B.C.)
 Israelites’ Exodus
 Conquered By the Hyksos (Semitic people from Palestine)
•
3- The New Kingdom: Revolution by Upper Egypt to Retake the
Country (1570-1075 B.C.)
The Old Kingdom
•
“The Age of the Pharaoh”
•
Pharaoh—Powerful rulers in Egypt who were
considered to be gods (or god-like).
•
Pyramids—During this era, the great pyramids were
built, along with their elaborate tombs.
•
Khufu—The Pharaoh responsible for building the
great pyramid at Giza.
•
Giza—It took about 20 years for thousands of workers
to construct this pyramid.
Did Aliens Build the Pyramids???
•
Numero Uno—This idea that Egyptians could not have built the
pyramids begins with the belief that Egyptians were incapable
because they lived so long ago (why???)
•
Numero Dos—Egyptians were brilliant architects and skilled
workers (why not???)
•
Numero Tres—check out this video:

The Middle Kingdom
•
The First Intermediate Period—In reaction to the powerful (and
oppressive) reign of pharaohs, the Egyptians led a rebellion which led to
the second kingdom.
•
“The Age of the People”—The result of the Egyptians’ rebellion against
oppressive pharaohs.
•
A different focus—Rather than focusing on pyramids and the pharaoh’s
afterlife, Egyptian government focused more on the people’s needs
(canals were built, for example).
•
Israel—During this kingdom, the children of Israel (Jacob) were brought
into the land.
 [video] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqCTq3EeDcY
•
The Hyksos—Towards the end of this kingdom, Egypt was overtaken by
invaders from Western Asia called the Hyksos.
The New Kingdom
•
“The Age of the Empire.”
•
Pharaohs—After regaining Egypt from the Hyksos, pharaohs became
“warrior-kings.” Likely, however, they learned war techniques and
acquired new weapons from the Hyksos.
Activity
•
Organize the Old – Middle – New kingdoms into charts with pictures
to represent the three kingdoms.
Great Egyptians
•
Hatshepsut—She was the first great woman ruler of Egypt, and
“possibly” the rescuer of Moses from the water.
•
Thutmose III—He was the greatest of “warrior kings,” and “possibly”
the Pharaoh that Moses fled from when it was made known that he
killed an Egyptian. He is sometimes called the “Napoleon of Egypt.”
•
Amenhotep II—Would not “Let Moses’ people go”
•
Rameses II—Reintroduced the building of large structures such as
temples and monuments. Egypt’s power declined as a nation,
however.
•
King Tut—Famous, young pharaoh whose death has been studied for
decades since his discovery. [video]

Religion
•
Pharaoh—god-king/warrior-king
•
The Afterlife & Mummification—Egyptians were incredibly
concerned with the afterlife. And thus, the most important
people used the most resources for “afterlife insurance.” (yes,
that’s a Mr. Wiley-invented term)
•
Amen-Ra—A sun deity
•
Osiris & Isis—see link:

•
“[They were] the most religious of all people” - Herodotus
Pyramids & Culture
•
Hieroglyphic writing (pictographic)
•
The Rosetta Stone
•
Papyrus—An Egyptian form of paper
 [video] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7cdmChqLdc
•
Solar Calendar—They developed a 365-day calendar
