How are living things
organized?
There are various levels of organization:
Let’s start small
and get bigger.
1) Atoms
Atoms are the smallest
piece of an element
Examples:
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen…
2) Molecules
Molecules are made of two or more atoms
of different elements (H2O, CO2)
Examples:
Glucose
Amino Acid
Water
What do you think a
Macromolecule is?
Large molecules consisting of many subunits.
Examples:
Protein
Cellulose
3) Organelles
The tiny “organs” inside a cell.
Examples:
Mitochondria
Cell Membrane
4) Cells
The smallest unit that is alive!
Example:
5) Tissue
A group of similar cells that carry out a
specific function.
Examples:
Muscle
Skin
6) Organ
Groups of tissues that work together for a
function.
Examples:
Brain
Stomach
7) Organ System
Groups of organs that function together
to carry out broad sets of functions.
Example:
8) Organism (or individual)
Individual that has its own distinct existence as a
complex, reproducing unit.
Examples:
9) Population
Group of organisms in the same species that
live in the same area. (Can interbreed.)
Examples:
School of fish
Herd of Zebra
10) Community
Populations of different species living and
interacting together in an area.
Example:
Marine community
11) Ecosystem
A Community (more than one species) plus the
abiotic (non-living) components of the
environment (with which they interact.)
Examples:
12.) Biome
 An area with similar climate conditions.
– Ex- desert, tundra, rainforest…
13.) Biosphere
 The entire sphere around earth where any
thing can live. Includes ALL known life!
