Atomic Structure Notes v Parts of the atom: Ø Proton: Located inside the nucleus. It has a positive charge. Ø Neutron: Located inside the nucleus. It has a neutral (no) charge. Ø Electron: Located outside the nucleus in the “electron cloud”. These are EXTREMELY small compared to protons and neutrons. v Periodic Table Information: •
•
Atomic Number: the number of protons. This is like our own Social Security number. It identifies the element!!! You can NOT change this number. If the number of protons changes, then it will be a NEW element! Atomic Mass: the total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom. Remember, electrons are so tiny that they do NOT count toward the atomic mass of the atom. Ø Number of Protons= Atomic Number Ø Number of Electrons= Number of Protons (this makes the atom neutral). Ø Number of Neutrons= Atomic Mass – Number of Protons § Atomic Number = protons § Atomic mass = protons + neutrons § Neutrons = atomic mass – protons § Electrons = protons √Remember… “pea” protons=electrons=atomic #
