Cells: The Basics
1. A prokaryote is an organism made up of
prokaryotic cells. A prokaryotic cell does not have
a nucleus. Prokaryotes arose more than 2.5 billion
years ago.
2. Prokaryotes are very small cells with simple
structure. They have DNA, cytoplasm, and
ribosomes.
3. A prokaryotic cell has a cell membrane, cell wall
and some have a sticky outer surface called a
capsule.
4. A eukaryote is an organism made up of one or
more eukaryotic cells. Eukaryotes arose about 1.5
billion years ago.
5. Prokaryote – capsule and cell wall
6.Eukaryote – nucleus and many membrane-bound
organelles
7. Both – cell membrane, DNA, cytoplasm, ribosomes
8. Multicellular organisms arose from both
prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
