My Double Helices,
Now that you are all experts in protein synthesis it is time to connect this knowledge with the study of GENETICS.
You know that DNA codes for _______________, which are crucial for your successful existence here on the 3rd rock
from the sun! In fact you recently studied how only 1 nitrogenous base change in the DNA code for hemoglobin
causes serious complications such as sickle cell anemia. We will be spending the next several classes exploring the
relationship between parental DNA and filial DNA. In other words, how you got to be you, by way of your parents DNA.
You will begin this endeavor by reading about blood types and today we will further investigate how your parents’
blood types created your blood type. Your first task is to answer some questions as well as ask some questions about
the article you read.
Define these terms:
Allele-
Homozygous chromosomes-
Heterozygous chromosomes-
Antigens-
Antibodies-
What are the three alleles of blood type genes and therefore what are the four possible blood
types?
Fill out the following chart:
Blood Group

Let’s try using a Punnett square to determine probability of genotypes and phenotypes.

In all cases, SHOW YOUR WORK for full credit.
Probability is expressed as a decimal, not a %. Fractions are ok.
Homozygous = two copies of same allele (HH, hh)
Heterozygous = two different copies of alleles (Hh)
Genotype = alleles (versions of genes) an organism has
Phenotype = physical trait that the gene expresses

A woman who is homozygous B marries a heterozygous type A man. What are the
possible genotypes and phenotypes of their children? INCLUDE PROBABILITY.

A man with type O marries a woman with AB. What are the possible genotypes and
phenotypes of their children? INCLUDE PROBABILITY.

What is the probability that a couple whose blood types are AB and O will have a
type A child?

A type B woman whose mother was type O marries a type O man. What are the
possible genotypes and phenotypes of their children? INCLUDE PROBABILITY.

A couple has a child with type A blood. If one parent is type O, what are the possible
genotypes of the other parent?
