Overpopulation

China- causes- Mao told people to have
many children. Confucian philosophypeople prefer to have boys rather than girls.
Farming communities- more people to help.
 Solution- Deng’s “One Child Policy.”
Fines and punishments for people that have
more than one child. Human Rights
violation.
Deforestation

Amazon rainforest in Brazil. Cause- cut
down the trees and sell the lumber.
Depletes the worlds oxygen supply,
endangered species, medicines.
 Solution- President Bush Earth Day Summit
in Rio. Reduce Latin America’s debts.
Desertification

North Africa- Ethiopia. Causesovergrazing of cattle. Eat vegetation that
holds the sand in place. The desert is
gradually spreading which brings the arid
climate with it. Causes drought and famine.
 Solution- Replant, irrigation systems.

Africa- caused by desertification (Africa/
Ethiopia)
Caused by overpopulation and unpredictable
rainfall (droughts)
Over exhaust the land
In developing nations 150 million children under 5
go to bed hungry.
Solution- Green Revolution- introduction of high
yielding seeds and chemical fertilizer.
Need to control population- family planning.
Debt

Cause- Latin America borrowed heavily
especially from the U.S. in order to
industrialize. Planned to make money from
industry and pay back debts.
 Impact/solution- Economy went into
recession. Not able to pay back debts.
Many argue industrial nations should
forgive debts.
Human Rights Violations

Cause- 1948- Universal Declaration of
Human Rights (U.N.)
 Examples- China- Tiananmen’s Square
 South Africa- apartheid.
 Solutions- economic sanctions.
Disease

Causes- overpopulation, overcrowding,
unsanitary conditions, poor health care.
 There is currently an AIDS epidemic in
Africa.
 Solution- World Health Organization
 “Marshall Plan” for Africa
Poverty

Cause- result of overpopulation.
Government needs money for schools,
housing and jobs.
 Solution- Education- skilled workers.
 Urbanization taking place.
 Limit population growth.
 Shift to free markets.
