Activity – Civil War and Reconstruction Gather as much information as you possibly can about the Civil War in your group ½ picked to rotate will change seats every 2 ½ minutes, 2 minutes, and 1 ½ minutes after having brainstormed what you know We will come together as a class and figure out what you’ve put down. Civil War and Reconstruction Characteristics North vs. South Abolitionists (people who supported the idea of getting rid of slavery) vs. people who supported keeping slavery or letting Popular Sovereignty (majority rule by the people) decide People who favored making a national law against slavery vs. those who favored states’ rights (the right of each state to choose whether or not to allow slavery Civil War and Reconstruction Characteristics Fugitive slaves – slaves who moved from the South to the North seeking their freedom Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 – federal marshal or anyone with jurisdiction to arrest, but was known not to arrest a slave, was liable to a $1000 fine Civil War Amendments – Amendments 13 (eliminate slavery), 14 (gives blacks their citizens’ rights), and 15 (gives black men the right to vote) The Civil War and Reconstruction 1860 Abraham Lincoln is elected and South Carolina secedes with others soon following, the country is divided and the Confederacy (or South) is formed The Civil War and Reconstruction 1861 The American Civil War begins The Civil War and Reconstruction 1863 Lincoln puts the Emancipation Proclamation (document that frees’ slaves in the south) into effect The Civil War and Reconstruction 1865 The American Civil War Ends and Abraham Lincoln is killed The Civil War and Reconstruction 1877 Reconstruction ends as a new President is elected by the whole country and the U.S. armed forces finally move out of the South Confederate States Southern states who formed a separate country after Abraham Lincoln was elected because they wanted states’ rights and slavery Gettysburg Address After Battle of Gettysburg One of the most famous speeches in history Given by Abraham Lincoln Underground Railroad Route from South to North Complicated and Difficult Led by conductors like Harriet Tubman Ku Klux Klan Begins at this time Bigots who believe in the supremacy of whites Hang, burn, rape and damage property of freed slaves Jim Crow Laws Poll Taxes – people had to pay $ to be able to vote at the polls Literacy Tests – people had to be able to read in order to be able to vote at the polls Grandfather Clause – allowed anyone who could vote before the Civil War and their descendents to vote without Literacy Tests or Poll Taxes Uncle Tom’s Cabin Book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe about a slave who develops a good relationship with his slave owner, even though the slave owner and his family beat him Slave forgives his owners because of his Christianity Changes the way some people look at slaves and their relationship with people Civil War – Who is this guy?
