can about the Civil War in your group


We will come together as a class and figure
out what you’ve put down.

Characteristics

North vs. South

Abolitionists (people who supported the idea of
getting rid of slavery) vs. people who supported
keeping slavery or letting Popular Sovereignty
(majority rule by the people) decide

People who favored making a national law against
slavery vs. those who favored states’ rights (the right
of each state to choose whether or not to allow
slavery
Civil War and Reconstruction
Characteristics

Fugitive slaves – slaves who moved from the South
to the North seeking their freedom

Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 – federal marshal or
anyone with jurisdiction to arrest, but was known not
to arrest a slave, was liable to a $1000 fine

Civil War Amendments – Amendments 13 (eliminate
slavery), 14 (gives blacks their citizens’ rights), and
15 (gives black men the right to vote)
