Cell Notes • There are two main types of cells - animal and plant These cells have very different jobs but share some of the same organelles. All plant and animal cells have the following organelles: ·Nucleus - control center of cell, directs all activities ·Cytoplasm - gel-like fluid, holds organelles ·Mitochondria powerhouse of the cell; creates energy for the cell ·Endoplasmic Reticulum - transports needed materials ·Ribosomes - produce proteins ·Golgi Bodies - receive materials, sort, and deliver to other parts ·Vacuoles - store food, water, and waste for the cell ·Cell Membrane - allows materials in and out of the cell ·Lysosomes - removes waste Plant Cells Although animal and plant cells share many organelles, there are structures specific to ONLY plant cells; the cell wall and the chloroplast. Cell Wall - a rigid layer of cellulose that protects and supports the plant cell Chloroplast - captures energy from sunlight and uses it to produce food(photosynthesis).
