Unit 4: Exploring Economics Lesson 5: Role of Incentives Review What are some techniques your parents use to get you to do what they want you to do such as clean your room or do your homework? Examples: Allowance or taking away TV Time We will now categorize our techniques as either positive or Negative. Positive + Negative - Incentives • Techniques we listed are examples of incentives. • Incentives are rewards or penalties that are used to encourage people to behave in certain ways. Economic Incentives • Economic incentives usually involve money. • What techniques that we listed, involve money? Task • You will now complete the “ Incentives and You” Chart • Describe examples of positive and negative incentives used at home and at school. • Jot down at least 3 EXAMPLES In each box! Identifying Positive Incentives • You will now work with a group to identify positive incentives in 4 historical ads. • Record your answers on the sheet provided. Negative Economic Incentives •Negative economic incentives are also used to influence people’s choices and behavior. •We will now work with the same group you did when you identified positive incentives. •You will work together to identify the negative economic influences shown on the sheet as well as how they are likely to influence a persons behavior. Task • You will now get a copy of a scenario • Read the scenario and identify the economic incentives described in the scenario. • Determine if they are positive or negative and how they influenced Mr. Jones’ behavior. • Use a highlighter as you read to highlight economic incentives. Discussion •What positive incentives were described? •How did they influence Mr. Jones’ behavior? •What negative incentives were described? •How did they influence Mr. Jones’ behavior ? •How might an incentive for a discount on one item at a store lead to a consumer purchasing other items from the store? •What other kinds of positive incentives do businesses use besides coupons and discounts? Project – “ Incentives Search” • You will now be gathering information about incentives from newspapers, observations in the community, interviews with people, and other resources. • Search the resources for examples of economic incentives and cut them out. • Also look for incentives in the community, such as signs in the window, coupon offers, offers of free items, etc. • Record examples of the incentives you find on the “Incentives Chart” Incentives Ad • • • • We will now make our own incentive Ad’s. Each ad must have either a positive or a negative incentive. Be Creative. We will share at the end! Word Cards in S.S. Folder! • Cut out and glue word card 24 in your social Studies folders on lined paper. • When you have finished your cutting and gluing, may write the definitions on a SEPARATE lined sheet of paper. • Hold on to your word cards and definitions until your next vocabulary quiz.
