Hosea the Man
• Hosea’s name means
“Salvation”
• Quoted in the NT several
times
• Mt 2:15; 9:13; 12:7; Rom 9:25,
26; 1 Cor 15:55; 1 Pet 2:5,
10.
• Matt. 2:15 – Hosea 11:1 ‘Out of Egypt I
called my son’
• Matt.9:13 & 12:7 - Hosea 6:6 For I delight
in loyalty rather than sacrifice, And in the
knowledge of God rather than burnt
offerings.
• I Cor.15:55 - Hosea 13:14 Shall I ransom
them from the power of Sheol? Shall I
redeem them from death? O Death, where
are your thorns? O Sheol, where is your
sting? Compassion will be hidden from My
sight.
• I Peter 2:5-10
• Hosea 1:10 Yet the number of the sons
of Israel Will be like the sand of the sea,
Which cannot be measured or numbered;
And in the place Where it is said to them,
"You are not My people," It will be said to
them, "You are the sons of the living
God."
• Hosea 2:23 "I will sow her for Myself in
the land. I will also have compassion on her
who had not obtained compassion, And I
will say to those who were not My people,
'You are My people!' And they will say,
'You are my God!'"
• Romans 9:25 As He says also in Hosea,
"I WILL CALL THOSE WHO
WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY
PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO
WAS NOT BELOVED,
'BELOVED.'"
• That is all about the Church! The
Bride of Christ!

Hosea 14
Hosea’s Message-----------------------------------|
The case of God's covenant
lawsuit is set forth, showing how
Israel has been an unfaithful bride
Ultimate
restoration
Hosea 4:6
My people are destroyed for lack of
knowledge: because thou hast rejected
knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou
shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast
forgotten the law of thy God,
I will also forget thy children.
• Knowledge - law of God (forgotten,
rejected)
• Results in destruction of people who once
were God’s people
• Hosea is prophesying the reasons God
will send Israel into captivity:
• 1. They slaughtered Ahab’s people when
God only pronounced judgment on Ahab
and Jezebel and their false prophets.
• 2. Israel now worshiped materialism, other
gods, and pleasure. – They forsook the
Lord!
• 2Ti 3:4 treacherous, reckless, conceited,
lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of
God,
12
• Hos 1:2 When the LORD first spoke
through Hosea, the LORD said to
Hosea, "Go, take to yourself a wife of
harlotry and have children of harlotry; for
the land commits flagrant harlotry,
forsaking the LORD."
• Forsake – ‘fall away from, depart to show
one’s backside’
• Hos 4:12 “… For a spirit of harlotry has
led them astray, And they have played the
harlot, departing from their God. “
13
• 1Ti 4:1 But the Spirit explicitly says
that in later times some will fall away from
the faith, paying attention to deceitful
spirits and doctrines of demons,
14
• Heb 3:10 "THEREFORE I WAS
ANGRY WITH THIS
GENERATION, AND SAID,
'THEY ALWAYS GO ASTRAY
IN THEIR HEART, AND THEY
DID NOT KNOW MY WAYS';
• Heb 3:11 AS I SWORE IN MY
WRATH, 'THEY SHALL NOT
ENTER MY REST.'"
15
• Heb 3:12 Take care, brethren, that
there not be in any one of you an evil,
unbelieving heart that falls away from the
living God.
• Heb 3:13 But encourage one another
day after day, as long as it is still called
"Today," so that none of you will be
hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
16
• 2Pe 3:17 You therefore, beloved,
knowing this beforehand, be on your
guard so that you are not carried away by
the error of unprincipled men and fall from
your own steadfastness,
• 2Pe 3:18 but grow in the grace and
knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. To Him be the glory, both now
and to the day of eternity. Amen.
17
They are like America today
• Hos 4:1 Listen to the word of the
LORD, O sons of Israel, For the
LORD has a case against the
inhabitants of the land, Because there is
no faithfulness or kindness Or knowledge
of God in the land.
• Hos 4:2 There is swearing, deception,
murder, stealing and adultery. They
employ violence, so that bloodshed
follows bloodshed.
18
• Hos 4:18 Their liquor gone, They play
the harlot continually; Their rulers dearly
love shame.
• Hos 4:19 The wind wraps them in its
wings, And they will be ashamed because
of their sacrifices.
• Hos 9:17 My God will cast them away
Because they have not listened to Him;
And they will be wanderers among the
nations. (70AD – 1917)
19
True Repentance
• Act 2:38 Peter {said} to them, "Repent,
and each of you be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of
your sins; and you will receive the gift of
the Holy Spirit.
• Act 3:19 "Therefore repent and return,
so that your sins may be wiped away, in
order that times of refreshing may come
from the presence of the Lord;
20
Hosea ends with:
• Hos 14:9 Whoever is wise, let him
understand these things; Whoever is
discerning, let him know them. For the
ways of the LORD are right, And the
righteous will walk in them, But
transgressors will stumble in them.
21
The Knowledge of God
• Hosea challenges Israel to ‘know the
Lord.’
– Their lives indicated that they didn’t know
the Lord (4:1-3)
– Evil actions indicate a lack of experience and
knowledge of God.
• They rejected God’s law and prophets
• ‘My people are destroyed for a lack of
knowledge’ (4:6).
• He urged people to press on to the fuller
knowledge of the Lord (6:3)
• Hsa 6:3 "So let us know, let us press on
to know the LORD. His going forth is as
certain as the dawn; And He will come to
us like the rain, Like the spring rain
watering the earth."
24
Yahweh’s covenant love in
Jesus
• Romans 9: 24 even us, whom he also
called, not only from the Jews but also
from the Gentiles? 25 As he says in
Hosea: "I will call them `my people' who
are not my people; and I will call her `my
loved one' who is not my loved one," 26
and, "It will happen that in the very place
where it was said to them, `You are not
my people,' they will be called `sons of the
living God.'"
In Jesus
• We are chosen to be a people, and called
to that destiny.
• We are redeemed from the power of sin
and death.
• We are blessed with ‘all things necessary
for life and godliness’ 2 Peter 1:3-4
2 Peter 1:3-4
• 3 His divine power has given us everything
we need for life and godliness through our
knowledge of him who called us by his own
glory and goodness. 4 Through these he
has given us his very great and precious
promises, so that through them you may
participate in the divine nature and escape
the corruption in the world caused by evil
desires.
• The Charge Against Israel
a. Against the nation
“..against you who live in the land: There is no
faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of
God in the land.” (4:1)
“my people are destroyed from lack of
knowledge” (4:6)
b. Against the priests in particular
“The more the priests increased, the more they
sinned against me; they exchanged their Glory
for something disgraceful. They feed on the
sins of my people and relish their wickedness.”
(4:7,8)
c. The imminent sentence
“For I will be like a lion to Ephraim, like a great
lion to Judah. I will tear them to pieces and go
away; I will carry them off, with no one to rescue
them.” (5:14)
• Their Appeal Rejected
a. The call to repentance
“Let us acknowledge the LORD; let us press on
to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he
will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains,
like the spring rains that water the earth.” (6:3)
b. Rejected because of Israel’s true
condition
“..Your love is like the morning mist, like the early
dew that disappears.” (6:4)
“For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and
acknowledgement of God rather than burnt
offerings.” (6;6)
Real Repentance…
• The Lord presents this problem with the
illustration of dew and a morning fog.
They do not survive the heat of day.
• Jesus also spoke about the necessity of
enduring to the end. Endurance is the
stuff of real faith. Saving faith is enduring
faith. For this reason you are called to
endure.
• Jam 1:23 For if anyone is a hearer of the
word and not a doer, he is like a man who
looks at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for
{once} he has looked at himself and gone
away, he has immediately forgotten what
kind of person he was. 25 But one who
looks intently at the perfect law, the {law}
of liberty, and abides by it, not having
become a forgetful hearer but an effectual
doer, this man will be blessed in what he
does.
• And this I pray, that your love may
abound still more and more in real
knowledge and all discernment, so that
you may approve the things that are
excellent, in order to be sincere and
blameless until the day of Christ
(Philippians 1:9-10).
Conclusion
“Who is wise? He will realize these
things. Who is discerning? He will
understand them. The ways of the
LORD are right; the righteous
walk in them, but the rebellious
stumble in them.” (14:9)
What about us?
• Like Israel, I have been richly blessed
• Like Israel, I am expected to remain
faithful
• Am I building God’s kingdom or mine?
• Am I growing in the Knowledge of God
and walking in the ways of the LORD?
• Or am I playing the unfaithful spouse,
flirting with the world?
We all Fail God!
• Everyone GOD loves has betrayed Him,
forsaken Him, and been unfaithful to Him.
– “All we like sheep have gone astray;
we
have turned every one to his own way…”
(Isaiah 53:6; ESV)
– “…for all have sinned and fall short of the
glory of God.” (Romans 3:23; ESV)
• I am no better than Gomer, I am no different.
I have broken GOD’S heart.
• Through Hosea’s experience, GOD is
telling His people that He knows what it
is like to suffer through the pain of
infidelity, the anguish of betrayal, and the
hurt of broken promises…
• GOD knows all there is to know about a
broken heart.
GOD loves me still!
• Everyone GOD loves has betrayed Him,
forsaken Him, been unfaithful to Him,
but
He loves us anyway.
– “…just like the love of the LORD for the
children of Israel…” (Hosea 3:1; NKJV)
– “…while we were still sinners, Christ died for
us.” (Romans 5:8; NKJV)
– “…with the precious blood of Christ…”
(1 Peter 1:19; NKJV)
• Hosea demonstrates how deep GOD’S
love goes for us.
His love for me!
17.that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith; that you, being rooted and
grounded in love,
18.may be able to comprehend with all the
saints what is the width and length and
depth and height –
19.to know the LOVE OF CHRISTwhich
passes knowledge; that you may be filled
with all the fullness of God.
Ephesians 3:17-19; NKJV
GOD wants me to
repent.
• GOD pleads with His people to return to
Him.
– “So you, by the help of your God, return” (3:5; 7:10; 11:5; 12:6;
14:1)
– “So I bought her for myself…” (3:2)
– “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.” (John 13:8;
NKJV)
– “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted
out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the
Lord…”
(Acts 3:19; NKJV)
• Redemption is impossible without
repentance!
Accept His redeeming love!
I have been crucified with Christ;
it is no longer I who live,
but Christ lives in me;
and the life which I now live in the flesh
I live by faith in the Son of God,
who loved me and gave Himself for me.
Galatians 2:20; NKJV
“I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth
you in righteousness and justice, in love and
compassion. I will betroth you in
faithfulness, and you will acknowledge the
LORD” (Hosea 2:19,20)
