BONUS: WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED ?
1. Water baptism.
A. Many people believe that water baptism is part of their salvation.
This cannot be true since Paul tells us
Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism,
What is that one baptism ? It is the baptism by the Holy Spirit of the believer into Christ.
Romans 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized
into his death?
Galatians 3:27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or
Gentiles,
whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
And many more. Including this.
1 Corinthians 1:14 I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius;
1 Corinthians 1:15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name.
1 Corinthians 1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel:
not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect.
B. Is water baptism an outward expression of an inward change ?
First, that is not in the bible.
Second, it is a sign.
1 Corinthians 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
1 Corinthians 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock,
and unto the Greeks foolishness;
1 Corinthians 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Third, it is a work.
Galatians 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law,
but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified
by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh
be justified.
Fourth, it is a lack of faith.
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
2. Come to the altar.
Are altar calls made to bring people to salvation, as they say. Is it so ?
Are they made to count people ? As you see, I have questions about them.
Have you not seen altar calls on TV ? Is this just another part of a TV show ?
What happens when you can't "come down" because you are sick or injured or watching TV ?
Can't you be saved simply by faith ? By sitting at home and believing that Christ died for your
sins ?
And are you going to repeat the prayer that some pastor or minister proposes ?
What is an altar anyway ?
Genesis 8:20 And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast,
and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.
Knowing this, I ask myself the question "Who is going to be the burnt offering ?"
Most places have no table, no altar and are not doing burnt offerings.
3. Say this after me.
What is this thing that we see "Repeat this prayer after me and you will be saved." ?
How sincere are you ? Will God believe you because you are saying someone else's prayer ?
Are you doing this ? Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions,
as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
Why dont you make your own prayer based on 1 Cor 15 verses 1-2-3-4 ?
Tell God in your words that you acknowledge the work of the cross, that Jesus Christ died
for your sins, that He was placed in a grave and that on the third day He rose again.
Is it not far better that YOU talk to God than to blindfully repeat what someone else told you ?
4. Repent for your sins.
Where do you find repent for your sins in the bible ? Nowhere.
Do not confuse repentance and confession.
There is the tradition repentance for sins in many churches.
That is tradition. Based on what ? Acts 2:38 ? Let's examine Acts 2:38
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Repent from what ? It does not say. It does say repent and be baptized for the remission of sins.
Remission is not forgiveness. Peter is not talking to you today.
Peter is talking to Israel, telling them to change their mind about Christ that they crucified.
Repentance is to regret. When you regret, you can change the way you think.
5. Ask Jesus into your heart.
You can ask all you want. He is not coming. Consider what Jeremiah says:
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
It is very simple. God cannot make you one of his own until you believe.
Begging God to do something will never work.
6. Speaking in tongues.
This one I heard in Pentacostal churches. They are looking for evidence of salvation, a sign.
1 Corinthians 1:21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God,
it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
1 Corinthians 1:22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
Why does Paul tell that tongues shall cease when which is perfect is come ?
Which is perfect is a reference to the completion of scripture. And scripture is complete.
1 Corinthians 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail;
whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1 Corinthians 13:9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1 Corinthians 13:10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be
done away.
How long does it take to learn another language ?
7. Good versus bad.
When I meet God, my good deeds will outweigh my bad deeds and God will let me in heaven.
Wishful thinking. And wrong too. God is not going to use a pair of balances to measure what you
have done
good on one side and bad on the other. The scales of justice ? What about believing ?
8. Good works.
That is cute. If you do a lot of good works, God is obligated to let you in into heaven.
Imagine my chinese buddhist friend. My friend did a lot of good works. He died.
Do you think that God took him into heaven ? Dont you have to be a believer to be saved ?
9. Going to church.
When I was a catholic, I had to go to church. Every Sunday. Not going meant that I committed a
mortal sin.
When I was a baptist, I missed a few Sundays and people told me "Dont forget the assembly.".
I knew that people misquoted "Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves
together,
as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day
approaching."
And I also knew that missing a Sunday was not a sin.
Today, I also know that Hebrews was not written to the Church, to the body of Christ.
That is why it is called HEBREWS and not CHURCH. Paul did not write Hebrews as some say.
The point is obvious, going to church is not a salvation issue.
10. Joining a church.
Joining a church, a local assembly, does not save anyone.
Becoming a member of a church does not save anyone.
The bible does not support membership as we see it today.
There is only one CHURCH today and it is the "body of Christ", made of believers.
The Church is a spiritual organization not a human organization.
11. I am a good person.
Me too, I am a good person. So what ? Let's see what God says.
Psalms 14:2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men,
to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
Psalms 14:3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy:
there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
Mark 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one,
that is, God.
As humans, we define good as a relative term. We compare ourself to others and other people
with other people.
The standard is God. How do you compare yourself with God ? You cannot.
How do you become good IN THE EYES OF GOD ?
Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ
unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Romans 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare
his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans 3:26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just,
and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
12. I woke up saved. The calvinist's way.
"I woke up saved." I heard this one in a chat room. This is Calvinism.
You dont wake up saved. God does not distribute salvation left and right.
God does not save some people and not others just by his choice. God gave each of us our own
choice.
There is only one way to be saved; believe.
13. Blessing Israel.
Blessing Israel is based on a promise given to Abraham.
Genesis 12:3 And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee
shall all
families of the earth be blessed.
It is not surprising that people want to help Jews and the nation of Israel.
Observations:
1. We are in the dispensation of the grace of God.
2. That promise was made outside this dispensation.
3. There is no Israel of God today. In 1948, was is God or the United Nations that created a
country ?
4. 1 Corinthians 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
Galatians 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither
male nor female:
for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.
14. Believing in God.
There is a difference between "believing in God" and "believing God".
James 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and
tremble.
The issue is do you believe what God said ? Do you believe what Christ has done for you ?
15. Keep the commandments.
Keeping the big 10 !
The first thing I can tell you is that you never did nor will ever keep the 10 commandments.
I never did. You never did. There is only one who ever did keep them Jesus of Nazareth.
If you did and you can't then God would have to take you in heaven because you earned it.
When you are saved, Paul tells us that we are no longer under the penalty of the law.
Ephesians 2:15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments
contained in ordinances;
for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
Ephesians 2:4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,
Ephesians 2:5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by
grace ye are saved)
16. Quit bad habits. Starting new ones.
Quit bad habits. We all have some. We all have new ones. Dont stop. We can all quit some bad
habit.
Start new ones. Good. We should improve all the time.
The problem is this Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
You cannot ever be perfect and God demands perfection. You can only be perfect by Christ.
In other word; you cannot reform the flesh. You have to become perfect in your spirit.
17. Live by the Golden Rule.
I found a definition on http://www.jcu.edu/philosophy/gensler/goldrule.htm
The golden rule is best interpreted as saying:
"Treat others only in ways that you're willing to be treated in the same exact situation."
Excellent ! Now be frank with yourself. Have you ever not performed by the golden rule ?
Several times ?
18. Make Jesus the Lord of your life.
This is also called "Lordship salvation."
How can He be the Lord of your life ? You can make Him the Lord of your life.
Does that make Him look at you and say "You are the child (or friend) of my life." ?
If you call Him Lord, do you call Him Saviour ? Get salvation and He will be your Lord.
19. Taking your cross and following Jesus.
Are you nuts ? Do you want to die ? Are you following the footsteps that lead to the cross ?
Christ told the people of his time to do this. They had to do it. This is what Peter means by
enduring to the end.
The people who want to follow Jesus as He lived on Earth have to sell everything. Including
your computer.
Luke 18:22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing:
sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven:
and come, follow me.
Read Luke 10 when He sent the seventy. Remember what He told them and told the apostles.
"And you want to do the same for your salvation." !
20. Get born again.
When Christ was talking with Nicodemus in John 3 he said:
John 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again,
he cannot see the kingdom of God.
He also said:
John 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
The THEE is Nicodemus and the YE is the nation of Israel.
The kingdom of God is the land promised to Israel as in Acts 1.
Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at
this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
These people are asking if Christ is going to restore the kingdom as it was in the days of King
David.
That kingdom is for Israel and was never promised to the body of Christ.
The body of Christ is going to heaven. You could say "I will be born again at the rapture when I
will get my new body."
21. I was born Catholic.
No way. You were not born Catholic or Baptist or < put the name you want in here >.
You were born a baby and had no clue of whom you were. On top of that, you were not a
believer in anything.
Just a baby, learning to speak, learning to walk, etc.
You became a Catholic either by choice or you dont know how. It was the family religion.
Being a member of an earthly organization does not save. Religion does not provide salvation.
BONUS: WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED ?
The only way to be saved, today, is to believe what Christ did for you on the cross.
This is the method:
Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of
God:
Ephesians 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
This is the what to believe: The gospel (good news) of your salvation.
1 Corinthians 15:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto
you,
which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
1 Corinthians 15:2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you,
unless ye have believed in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received,
how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
1 Corinthians 15:4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the
scriptures:
That is it.
I believe that Christ died for my sins, that He was placed in a grave,
and on the third day He rose again.
You cannot add a thing to that. If you do, you frustrate the grace of God.
Galatians 2:21 I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then
Christ is dead in vain.
He did it all. I did nothing.
