Bacterial problems associated with scallop Pecten maximus larval culture
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Nicolas, Jean-louis; Corre, S; Gauthier, Gilles; Robert, Rene; Ansquer, Dominique.
Scallop Pecten maximus larvae have been cultured at the Argenton and Tinduff (Brittany, France) hatcheries with antibiotic
treatment (chloramphenicol at 8 ppm) for 15 yr. Without treatment, outbreak of disease has normally occurred between Day 12
and Day 19 or sometimes earlier. A bacteriological study of larvae reared with and without antibiotic was performed over a 4 yr
period. Among the collected strains, 2 clusters (C and F) of vibrios were present at high densities only in larvae cultured without
treatment. One cluster (C) was routinely isolated over the 4 yr of study, while the other (F) was collected only in the third year.
Their virulence with respect to scallop larvae and their lack of infectivity with respect to oyster larvae were demonstrated in...

Hermaphroditism in Marine Mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819), (Mollusca: Mytilidae)
Provedor de dados: 77
Autores: Montenegro Villalobos,Diana; Olivares Paz,Alberto; González,María Teresa.
Marine bivalves are essentially gonochoric species. However, some occasional hermaphrodites specimens can be found. A
histological description of two (among 179) hermaphrodites of the marine mussel Perumytilus purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819) that
were collected in San Jorge Bay (24S) is given. The low proportion of hermaphrodites suggests that P. purpuratus
hermaphroditism could be an accidental phenomenon; nevertheless other causes are also discussed in the present study.

Viruses of bivalve shellfish
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Renault, Tristan.
Bivalve molluscs are filter feeders and as a consequence they may bioaccumulate in their tissues viruses that infect humans and
higher vertebrates. However, there have also been described mortalities of bivalve molluscs associated with viruses belonging to
different families. Mass mortalities of adult Portuguese oysters, Crassostrea angulata, among French livestocks (between 1967 et
1973) were associated with irido-like virus infections. Herpesviruses were reported in the eastem oyster, Pacific oyster and
European flat oyster and lately in scallops and clams. Disseminated neoplasia, a proliferative cell disorder of the circulatory
system of bivalves, although of uncertain aetiology, has been suggested to be caused by retroviral infections. Other viruses...

Contrôle de la ploidie par imagerie numérique dans des expériences d'induction de la triploidie chez
les mollusques bivalves
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Gerard, Andre; Peignon, Jean-marie; Chagot, Dominique.
Individual determination of ploidy level in experimentally induced triploid bivalve molluscs using image cytometry. The sexual
maturation in bivalve molluscs causes decreased growth and sometimes increased mortalities. These drawbacks can be avoided by
genetic sterilization (triploidy). Triploïdy induction require a egg treatment and a ploidy control at each generation. The ploidy
level is usually determined by counting the chromosomes, a technique which is relatively easy for the trochophora stage and for
juveniles measuring from 5 mm to 3 cm only. ln order to be able to follow up the evolution of the ploidy rate during any stage of
animallife, we have developed an estimation method based on image cytometry. Individual DNA content is determined by...

Does bivalve mucus favour the growth of their main food source, microalgae?
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Cognie, B; Barille, Laurent.
Bivalves, by releasing inorganic nutrients, can stimulate the growth of the primary producers on which they feed. Dissolved
excretion and mineralization of biodeposits (pseudofaeces and faeces), two indirect processes related to their feeding activity,
have already been identified. This study investigated whether microalgal growth is also dependent on the mucus secreted by
bivalves and rejected with their biodeposits. An experimental study based on algal growth tests was conducted to determine
whether the mucus coating the pseudofaeces and faeces of the oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) could stimulate the growth of
nine marine microalgae: a Prasinophyceae [Tetraselmis suecica (Butcher)] and eight Diatomophyceae [Amphora sp. (Ehrenberg),

PRIMER REGISTRO EN COLOMBIA DE CORBICULA FLUMINEA (MOLLUSCA: BIVALVIA:
CORBICULIDAE), UNA ESPECIE INVASOR
Provedor de dados: 50
Autores: De La Hoz Aristizábal,Maria V.
The bivalve Corbicula fluminea Müller is recorded for the first time in Colombia, in the National Park Isla de Salamanca. This
protected area includes freshwater channels and mixohaline lagoons influenced by waters of both the Magdalena River and the
Caribbean Sea. This exotic bivalve occurs locally in freshwater channels close to the Magdalena River as well as in the latter,
whereas another corbiculid native species, Polymesoda solida, is commonly found in the mixohaline lagoons. Densities of C.
fluminea ranged from 10 to 100 ind/m2 along with low numbers of P. solida. Lengths ranged form 10 to 43 mm in a predominant
muddy substrate. Local fishermen have stated that C. fluminea was established approximately in 1992; this clam is being

Recolonization of experimental gaps by the mussels Brachidontes darwinianus and B. solisianus in a
subtropical rocky shore
Provedor de dados: 52
Autores: Tanaka,Marcel Okamoto.
In this study, the recolonization speed of the mussels Brachidontes darwinianus and B. solisianus was compared to evaluate their
responses to gaps opened by disturbances in the rocky shore. B. darwinianus was much faster than B. solisianus, rapidly closing
gaps in the mussel bed. When they co-occurred, distribution patterns of these species were related not only with distinct
physiological tolerances but also with responses to disturbance. B. darwinianus was more tolerant to low salinities, dominated
estuarine zones generally occuring lower in the midlittoral, and presented a faster response to opened gaps.

Autores: Lopes,Michelle; Vieira,João.
This work describes the spatial-temporal variation of the relative abundance and size of Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857)
collected in São Gonçalo Channel through bottom trawl with a 0.5 cm mesh, at depths between 3 and 6 m. The estimative of mean
relative abundance (CPUE) ranged from 2,425.3 individuals per drag (ind./drag) in the spring to 21,715.0 ind./drag in the fall,
with an average of 9,515.3 ind./drag throughout the year. The estimated mean density of L. fortunei for the deep region of São
Gonçalo Channel ranged from 1.2 to 10.3 ind./m², and it was recorded a maximum density of 84.9 ind./m² in the fall of 2008. The
method of sampling using bottom trawl enabled the capture of L. fortunei under the soft muddy bottom of the channel, in

In vivo RNA interference in oyster -vasa silencing inhibits germ cell development
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Fabioux, Caroline; Corporeau, Charlotte; Quillien, Virgile; Favrel, Pascal; Huvet, Arnaud.
This study investigated the potential of RNA interference, which is technically challenging in bivalve mollusc species, to assess
gene function in the oyster Crassostrea gigas. We designed dsRNA targeting the oyster vasa-like gene (Oyvlg), specifically
expressed in oyster germ cells. In vivo injection of oyvl-dsRNA into the gonad provokes a knockdown phenotype corresponding
to germ cell underproliferation and prematurely arrested meiosis througout the organ. The most severe phenotype observed is
sterile. This knockdown phenotype is associated with a decrease in Oyvlg mRNA level of between 39% and 87%, and a strong
reduction in OYVLG protein, to an undetectable level. Therefore, Oyvlg appears to be essential for germ cell development in
Crassostrea gigas,...

This study investigated the non-neutrality of genetic polymorphism in two alpha-amylase genes (AMYA and AMYB) in the
oyster Crassostrea gigas. Bi-parental oyster families, bred to be polymorphic for markers in these genes, were monitored for
growth and survival for 1 year under standard culture conditions in two French production sites. Within-family genotype
frequencies indicated that the two amylase genes were closely linked (c. 1.7 cM). Within two of three families, significant
differences in growth were observed between genotypes at one of the two production sites, suggesting that this polymorphism is
not neutral and might be under selection because of its role in digestive function. Estimated daily yields were different between
amylase genotypes,...

Cell separation by centrifugal elutriation
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Bachere, Evelyne; Chagot, Dominique; Grizel, Henri.
There is an ongoing need to isolate and purify ceIls in bivalve mollusc disease research. Many separation techniques differentiate
cells solely by a single factor and usually require additives in the medium that may damage live cells. Centrifugai elutriation is a
technique that separates particles by size and density simultaneously and can be conducted in physiological media without
additives. Living cells can be separated without chemical damage and, because the procedure can be conducted aseptically, cells
can be maintained in vitro after elutriation. A description of the technique, methods to determine flow rates and rotor speeds, and a
preliminary separation of oyster hyalinocytes is presented

Consistently classified among the references for calcite simple prisms, the microstructural units that form the outer layer of the
Pinctada margaritifera have been investigated through a series of morphological, crystallographical and biochemical
characterizations. It is often said that the polygonal transverse shape of the prisms result from the competition for space between
adjacent crystals. In contrast to this classical scheme the Pinctada prisms appear to be composed of four successive developmental
stages from the concentrically growing disks on the internal side of the periostracum to the morphological, structural and
compositional changes in both envelopes and mineral components at the end of the prisms. These latest structural and

Heat shock protein 90 of Bonamia ostreae: characterization and possible correlation with infection of
the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Prado Alvarez, Maria; Chollet, Bruno; Couraleau, Yann; Morga, Benjamin; Arzul, Isabelle.
In this study we described the cytosolic HSP90 of Bonamia ostreae, an intracellular parasite of Ostrea edulis haemocytes. The
complete open reading frame was assembled by Rapid Amplification cDNA Ends reactions on cDNA of B. ostreae infected
haemocytes. HSP90 amplification was corroborated in infected oysters and B. ostreae purified cells. The functionality of the
HSP90, studied by inhibitory assays with radicicol, suggests that this protein may play a role in haemocyte invasion. Our results
inform the molecular basis that governs B. ostreae-O. edulis interactions.

Some parameters measuring the production of organic matter, in field conditions, by a population of the bivalve mollusc Donax

To examine further a previously reported association between amylase gene polymorphism and growth in the Pacific oyster
Crassostrea gigas, ecophysiological parameters and biochemical and molecular expression levels of alpha-amylase were studied in
Pacific oysters of different amylase genotypes. Genotypes that previously displayed significantly different growth were found to
be significantly different for ingestion and absorption efficiency. These estimated parameters, used in a dynamic energy budget

these genotypes. The observed association between growth and amylase gene polymorphism is therefore more likely to be related

Salinity influences disease-induced mortality of the oyster Crassostrea gigas and infectivity of the
ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1)
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Fuhrmann, Marine; Petton, Bruno; Quillien, Virgile; Faury, Nicole; Morga, Benjamin; Pernet, Fabrice.
Mortality of young Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas associated with the ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) is occurring worldwide.
Here, we examined for the first time the effect of salinity on OsHV-1 transmission and disease-related mortality of C. gigas, as
well as salinity-related effects on the pathogen itself. To obtain donors for OsHV-1 transmission, we transferred laboratory-raised
oysters to an estuary during a disease outbreak and then back to the laboratory. Oysters that tested OsHV-1 positive were placed in
seawater tanks (35‰, 21°C). Water from these tanks was used to infect naïve oysters in 2 experimental setups: (1) oysters
acclimated or non-acclimated to a salinity of 10, 15, 25 and 35‰ and (2) oysters acclimated to a salinity of 25‰; the...

While literature is relatively abundant on adult shellfish, ecophysiological studies at the larval stage are scarce because of both
technical difficulties and inadequate methodology. A tool dedicated to provide basic information for larval ecophysiology was
accordingly developed. Two steps were followed: first a flow-through method of Crassostrea gigas larval culture was perfected

Adaptation du métabolisme respiratoire de l'huître creuse Crassostrea gigas

Summer mortality of the oyster result from the interaction of many factors. A respiratory assumption proposes a link between the
supposed causes of the energy state, the cultivation methods and the medium. This work is focused towards the search for specific
metabolic markers of environmental stresses. The cDNA of genes coding for PK and PEPCK were cloned and sequenced in order
to detect their regulation level. The sediment nearness affects the state of energy reserves, the metabolic pathways of energy
production implying a regulation of the PK. Face to the dissolved oxygen decline, oysters were oxyregulator but with a low
regulation ability. In hypoxia, glycolysis was slowed down. PK activity was inhibited resulting from an increase in alanine

A novel technique was developed for the flocculation of marine microalgae commonly used in aquaculture. The process entailed
an adjustment of pH of culture to between 10 and 10.6 using NaOH, followed by addition of a non-ionic polymer Magnafloc
LT-25 to a final concentration of 0.5 mg L−1. The ensuing flocculate was harvested, and neutralised giving a final
concentration factor of between 200- and 800-fold. This process was successfully applied to harvest cells of Chaetoceros
calcitrans, C. muelleri, Thalassiosira pseudonana, Attheya septentrionalis, Nitzschia closterium, Skeletonema sp., Tetraselmis

Since 1991, numerous herpesvirus infections associated with high mortality have been reported around the world in various
marine bivalve species. In order to determine whether these infections are due to ostreid herpesvirus-l (OsHV1), a previously
characterized pathogen of the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas), PCR analysis was carried out on 30 samples of larvae collected
from four bivalve species (C. gigas, Ostrea edulis, Ruditapes decussatus and Ruditapes philippinarum), most exhibiting mortality
prior to collection. All samples were shown to be infected by OsHV1. Viral genomes in three samples of C. gigas and three of R.

First evidence of a potential antibacterial activity involving a laccase-type enzyme of the

Phenoloxidases (POs) are a group of copper proteins including tyrosinase, catecholase and laccase. In several insects and
crustaceans, antibacterial substances are produced through the PO cascade, participating in the direct killing of invading
microorganisms. However, although POs are widely recognised as an integral part of the invertebrate immune defence system,
experimental evidence is lacking that these properties are conserved in molluscs, and more particularly in the Pacific oyster
Crassostrea gigas. In the present study, Vibrio splendidus LGP32 and Vibrio aestuarianus 02/041 growths were affected, after
being treated with C. gigas haemocyte lysate supernatant (HLS), and either a common substrate of POs,
l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (l-DOPA), to...

Polyploidy in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum. II. Chemical induction of tetraploid embryos
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Diter, Alain; Dufy, Christian.
Tetraploidy was induced in embryos of Ruditapes philippinarum by treating the eggs with cytochalasin B. (CB). Two treatment
times were found to be effective in inducing tetraplidy : 0 to 10 minutes after insemination (before formation of the first polar
body) and 45 minutes after insemination (just before the first cleavage). Treatments, started 5 and 45 minutes after insemination,
produced 64.4 ± 7.8% and 28.3 ± 2.3% tetraploid embrios, respectively, after 6 hours (on the average over 3 experiments).
However, no tetraploids were detected in 4-month-old spat. Sperm entry delayed by the CB could be involved in induction of
tetraploidy by early treatment.

Etat des connaissances sur la pathologie chez les mollusques bivalves
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Fouche, Dominique.
A short description of the disease causing organisms affecting bivalves is presented in this document, including the diagnosis, the
oustanding research and bivalve husbandry. Mollusc populations may be safe from disease epizootics if an early prevention of
disease is coupled with a strict regulatory system on transfer (according to what happens in agriculture). The species to culture
may be thoroughly selected and risky populations moved. Imported stocks are strictly controlled. The researchcs's target is to
improve the diagnosis tools and try to find resistant mollusc strains. Epidemiological surveys are also necessary to control
diseases.

Morphology and ecology of bivalve molluscs from Admiralty Bay, King George Island, Antarctica
Provedor de dados: 52
Autores: Absher,Theresinha M.; Feijó,Angela R.
Bivalve species were collected from shallow coastal areas of King George Island (Martel, Mackellar and Ezcurra Inlets of
Admiralty Bay). Twenty one species belonging to 16 genera and 12 families were identified and their morphometric and
morphological shell characteristics were described. Three main characteristics were found to be common to the majority of the
bivalve species sampled: 1) thin fragile shells; 2) small size of individuals (76%), and 3) the lack of true cardinal teeth (72%).
Comparison of calcium data from a tropical estuary and a subantarctic coastal shallow area suggested that the calcium in the sea
water was not a constraint to shell building but shell thickness could be an adaptation to the efficiency of energy partitioning.

To investigate the control at the mRNA level of glycogen metabolism in the cupped oyster Crassostrea gigas, we report in the
present paper the cloning and characterization of glycogen phosphorylase and synthase cDNAs (Cg-GPH and Cg-GYS,
respectively, transcripts of main enzymes for glycogen use and storage), and their first expression profiles depending on oyster
tissues and seasons. A strong expression of both genes was observed in the labial palps and the gonad in accordance with specific
cells located in both tissues and ability to store glucose. Cg-GPH expression was also found mainly in muscle suggesting ability to
use glycogen as readily available glucose to. supply its activity. For seasonal examinations, expression of Cg-GYS and Cg-GPH

Vibrio tapetis is the marine bacterium responsible for the brown ring disease (BRD) affecting die manila clam, Ruditapes
philippinarum. Identification of V tapelis has been previously performed using biochemical criteria and serological procedures.
All of these methods are time consuming and ill-adapted to individual screening. This study describes an oligonucleotidic probe
(Vt446) and two PCR primers, deduced from the 16S rDNA sequence, allowing a fast and specific V tapetis identification using
dot blot hybridisation and species-specific primed PCR (SSP-PCR). The probe and primers have been tested on 60 strains,
including referenced Vibrio sp., Gram negative and positive bacteria, marine bacteria samples and isolated clam bacteria. For all

Why carrying capacity models are useful tools for management of bivalve molluscs culture
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Heral, Maurice.
In areas where oyster or mussel culture is very intensive, declines of growth rate and decreases of survival rate have occurred. For
these reasons, plans have been proposed to regulate the cultivated biomasses in order to fit the carrying capacity of the different
ecosystems (Heral et al 1990; Heral, 1991). In areas where new aquaculture of molluscs is beginning, oyster or mussel farmers
need to know how large the extension of the culture could be and what the maximal densities should be in order to obtain the
maximum economic benefit. Furthermore, as mollusc cultures are developed in coastal areas, they are very susceptible to changes
in environmental conditions that can modify trophic relationships, or directly reduce growth rate, physiological...

Characterization of a gonad-specific transforming growth factor-beta superfamily member
differentially expressed during the reproductive cycle of the oyster Crassostrea gigas
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Fleury, Elodie; Fabioux, Caroline; Lelong, C; Favrel, P; Huvet, Arnaud.
Through differential screening between oyster families selected for high and low summer survival, we have characterized a new
transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) superfamily member. This novel factor, named oyster-gonadal-TGF beta-like
(og-TGF beta-like), is synthesized as a 307 amino acid precursor and displays 6 of the 7 characteristic cysteine residues of the
C-terminal, mature peptide. Sequence comparison revealed that og-TGF beta-like has a low percentage of identity with other
known TGF-beta superfamily members, suggesting that og-TGF beta-like is a derived member of this large superfamily.
Real-time PCR (RT-PCR) analysis in different oyster tissues showed that og-TGF beta-like is specifically expressed in both male
and female gonads, at...

pathogenesis and pathogenicity. Several recent bivalve-interaction models have been studied, including Pecten larvae-Vibrio
pectinicida, brown ring disease, juvenile oyster disease, Pacific oyster nocardiosis and summer mortalities of oysters. In addition,
the taxonomy and phylogeny of new potential bivalve pathogens and their virulence factors have been established. Facing the
difficulty of identifying bacterial strains associated with molluscan diseases (mainly vibriosis), polyphasic approaches have been

We report the isolation, development and multiplex optimisation of 12 new microsatellite loci for the great scallop, Pecten
maximus. Diversity was moderate to high, with number of alleles ranging from 4 to 20 and observed heterozygosity between 0.28
and 0.88. Progeny produced in a commercial hatchery was used to test locus power for parentage assignment. The percentage of
offspring that was unambiguously assigned to a unique pair of parents was 97% (software package CERVUS-COLONY).
Parentage assignment revealed that 22% of the studied progeny resulted from unplanned crosses. Effective population size of the
study progeny was also estimated. Our study illustrates the power of microsatellites for the genetic monitoring of
hatchery-produced great scallops.

Reduction of adhesion properties of Ruditapes philippinarum hemocytes exposed to Vibrio tapetis
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Choquet, Gwenaelle; Soudant, P; Lambert, C; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Paillard, C.
Vibrio tapetis is the causative agent of brown ring disease (BRD), which affects a species of clam, Ruditapes philippinarum. After
incubation with V. tapetis, hemocytes lose filopods and become rounded, indicating cytotoxic activity of the bacterium. To rapidly
quantify this cytotoxicity, a flow-cytometry test was developed based on the capacity of V tapetis to inhibit adhesion of clam
hemocytes to plastic. Several bacteria:hemocyte ratios, the cytotoxicity of other Vibrio spp. pathogenic to bivalves, and that of
various V. tapetis isolates were tested. Inhibition of adherence is detectable with as few as 5 bacteria per hemocyte. The greater
cytotoxic activity of V tapetis compared to that of V splendidus and V pectenicida suggests a specific pathogenicity...

the early effects on genes, enzymes and haemocyte parameters implicated in immune defence mechanisms in C. gigas oysters
exposed to a potentially hostile environment, i.e. to an herbicide alone or within a mixture. Following 2 h of exposure to the
herbicide diuron at 1 mu g L-1 the repression of different genes implicated in immune defence mechanisms in the haemocytes and
the inhibition of enzyme activities, such as laccase-type phenoloxidase (PO) in the plasma, were observed. The inhibition of
superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in the plasma was also observed after 6 and 24 h of exposure. In the mixture with the

Temperature is a major factor contributing to the biogeography of intertidal poikilotherms. The population dynamics of intertidal
invertebrates like mussels are strongly dependent on larval supply and larval mortality. Unlike adults, which are resistant to
fluctuating environmental conditions, larvae are highly sensitive to the physicochemical conditions of the pelagic zone. The
effects of rearing temperature on larval and post-larval performance of 2 coexisting mussels species, Mytilus edulis and M.
trossulus, were examined in this study. In the first experiment, larvae of both species were reared separately at constant

Reproductive effort of Pacific oysters: A trait associated with susceptibility to summer mortality
Provedor de dados: 5

Summer mortality of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between oysters, their environment
and their pathogens. The physiological status of an oyster, especially its reproductive status, is suspected to play a significant role
in the outcome of this interaction. As genetic variability exists for susceptibility to summer mortality, resistant (R) and susceptible
(S) oyster lines were produced using a divergent selection scheme. The present paper reports a histological study on gonad area,
which is representative of reproductive effort, in randomly chosen five R and five S oyster lines. The R lines showed a
significantly lower gonad area than the S lines (P<0.001). with an estimated mean difference of 12.5%, whereas,...

Sulphur-oxidising endosymbiont-bearing bivalves often inhabit seagrass meadows, where they can control sulphide levels and
variably contribute to carbon cycling, by feeding on endosymbiotic bacteria and/or on particulate organic matter from the water
column. The patterns of variability in their feeding mode and their spatial distribution within the seagrass meadows are however
poorly studied. Seagrass beds form naturally patchy habitats with seagrass-sand edges that may have variable effects on different

with a mature portion consisting of 43 amino acid residues. Cy-Defh1 and CyDefh2 share 86% amino acid identity and belong to
the "arthropod-molluscs defensin family". qRT-PCR analyses indicate that Cg-defh2 is continuously expressed in the hemocytes

Overwiew on selective breeding and genetic improvement in bivalve shellfish
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Boudry, Pierre.
Dr. Boudry focussed his talk on oysters, which are the most important bivalve species produced world wide (more than 4 million
tons). One of the main characteristic of bivalve aquaculture is that most of the juveniles ("seed or "spat") are collected from
natural recruitment (e.g. 100% of the European mussel production). Hatchery propagation is used in the case of introduced species
(e.g. Crassostrea gigas in USA) or limited natural recruitment.
The most significant genetic improvement for the production

tetraploids. Triploidy lead to highly reduced gametogenesis and, as a result better growth and survival. Many quantitative...

A previously published food web model of a mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France, was updated with revised parameters, and
a realistic surface area and density of existing oyster cultures on the mudflat. We developed 2 hypothetical scenarios to estimate
the impact of oyster cultivation on the food web structure of the ecosystem: one with no oysters, the other with a doubled area
devoted to cultivated oysters in the bay. Oysters are direct trophic competitors of other filter feeders, and their presence modifies
benthic-pelagic coupling by forcing a shift from pelagic consumers to benthic consumers. Increasing the surface area of...

Marine bivalves show among the greatest allozyme diversity ever reported in Eukaryotes, putting them historically at the heart of
the neutralist-selectionist controversy on the maintenance of genetic variation. Although it is now acknowledged that this high

a rigorous assessment of the silent nucleotide diversity in natural populations of marine bivalves, which has not yet been done.

The strategies used by bacterial pathogens to circumvent host defense mechanisms remain largely undefined in bivalve molluscs.
In this study, we investigated experimentally the interactions between the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) immune system and
Vibrio aestuarianus strain 01/32, a pathogenic bacterium originally isolated from moribund oysters. First, an antibiotic-resistant V.
aestuarianus strain was used to demonstrate that only a limited number of bacterial cells was detected in the host circulatory
system, suggesting that the bacteria may localize in some organs. Second, we examined the host defense responses to V.
aestuarianus at the cellular and molecular levels, using flow-cytometry and real-time PCR techniques. We showed that

Carbon stable isotopes and fatty acids were measured in the suspended particulate organic matter (POM) of the Thau lagoon to
study its qualitative temporal changes in relation to environmental factors and to identify the food sources of bivalves over a
one-yr-cycle in relation to their growth. Reciprocally, the impact of shellfish farming on POM was also studied. Oysters and
mussels were sampled and measured for biometry, stable isotopes and fatty acid composition. Water samples were collected at
two sites, both inside and outside of the shellfish farming area, to determine concentrations in POM, chlorophyll a (Chl a) and
stable isotopes. Carbon isotopes and fatty acids in bivalves reflected seasonal changes in food sources, which varied consistently

For determination of ploidy levels in bivalves,
three techniques are now routinely used: karyological determination.
microfluorimetry and flow cytometry. This paper proposes an alternative technique which is based on determination of the optical
density (OD) of stained nuclei using image analysis. A karyological and image analysis comparative experiment conducted on
juveniles of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) and Ruditapes philippinarum (Adam & Reeve) is described and highlights the
advantages of the image analysis technique. Initially developed on C. gigas and R. philippinarum, the image analysis method was
easily extended to other bivalve species and to different developmental stages, as demonstrated by two experiments conducted on

Peptaibols are known membrane-modifying peptides that were recently detected in marine sediments and mussels collected from a
shellfish farming area (Fier d'Ars, Atlantic coast, France). In this investigation, embryotoxicity bioassays with oysters (Crassostrea
gigas) were performed to assess acute toxicity of alamethicin and different groups of peptaibols produced by a Trichoderma
longibrachiatum strain isolated from marine environment. C gigas embryos appeared very sensitive to all the metabolites
examined with higher toxic effects for long-sequence peptides (EC50 ranging from 10 to 64nM). D-shaped larvae with mantle
abnormality were particularly noticed when peptaibol concentrations increased. Disturbances of embryogenesis were also
observed following...

We have characterized in the oyster Crassostrea gigas an extracellular superoxide dismutase (Cg-EcSOD) which appears to bind
lipopolysaccharides (LPS). The protein has been purified from the oyster plasma and identified as a Cu/ZnSOD according to its
N-terminal sequencing and biological activity. Cg-EcSOD expression and synthesis are restricted to hemocytes as revealed by in
situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry. Cg-EcSOD-expressing hemocytes were seen in blood circulation, in connective
tissues, and closely associated to endothelium blood vessels. Cg-EcSOD presents in its amino acid sequence a LPS-binding motif
found in the endotoxin receptor CD14 and we show that the protein displays an affinity to Escherichia coli bacteria and with LPS
and Lipid A....

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), a key neuropeptide regulating reproduction in vertebrates has now been characterized
in a number of non-vertebrate species. Despite the demonstration of its ancestral origin, the structure and the function of this
family of peptides remain poorly known in species as distant as lophotrochozoans. In this study, two GnRH-related peptides
(Cg-GnRH-a and CgGnRH-G) were characterized by mass spectrometry from extracts of the visceral ganglia of the Pacific oyster
Crassostrea gigas. These peptides showed a high degree of sequence identity with GnRHs of other mollusks and annelids and to a
lesser extent with those of vertebrates or with AKH and corazonins of insects. Both the mature peptides and the transcript

Autores: Simone,Luiz Ricardo L.; Gonçalves,Eric Pedro.
The bivalve Myoforceps aristatus (Dillwyn, 1817), also known as Lithophaga aristata, have been recently collected in the coasts
of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil; a species that bores shells of other mollusks. This occurrence has been interpreted as an
invasion of this species, originally from the Caribbean. The distinguishing character of the species is the posterior extensions of
the shell crossing with each other. Because specimens with this character have also been collected in the Pacific Ocean, they all
have been considered a single species. However, it is possible that more than one species may be involved in such worldwide
distribution. With the objective of providing full information based on Atlantic specimens, a complete anatomical...

Analysis of shell colour determinism in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Peignon, Jean-marie; Gerard, Andre; Naciri, Yamama; Ledu, Christophe; Phelipot, Pascal.
The Manila clam presents a large polymorphism for shell colours and patterns. No experiment has been conducted to study the
determinism of such a polymorphism which has been well known for a long time. The aim of this study was firstly to determine
the genetic variation for shell colour and secondly to produce some homozygous lines for the shell colouring. These lines could
then be used as controls for laboratory experiments. The colouring is defined by three characters: asymmetry, ornamentation and
hue. Clams with asymmetrical colouring are not fully pigmented, except for a posterior band on the left valve. Clams with
symmetrical colouring are fully pigmented on the two valves. Four cross series were conducted between the different characters:

Significant component of the marine benthic ecosystem, exploited bivalves are mainly located inside the coastal area, which
temporal and spatial features generate natural population fluctuations and contribute to considerable biomass and demographic
structure changes added to anthropogenic activities’ effects (fishing, pollution,…). Understanding of the relationships between the
species, its environment and its exploitation is crucial and their formalization, including for management purposes, requires
development of mathematical models that aim at describing the functioning of the system, to explain the observed phenomenon in
terms of cause and effect or predict effects of new causes. Originating from venerid culture trials carried out in France in the...

This study evaluated the effects of larval densities, cultured in flow-through system, in the yield and quantity of larvae. The first
experiment compared the larval yield of a flow-through system (80 larvae mL-1) and a batch system (8 larvae mL-1), which
resulted in a higher yield and number of larvae in the flow-through system, after 23 days. The second experiment compared two
larval densities (20 and 45 larvae mL-1) in flow-through system. The densities affected the yield after 15 and 23 days and the
larvae final quantity after all tested times (8, 15, and 23 days). After 23 days of larviculture, the yield was highest for 20 larvae
mL-1 and the larval number for 45 larvae mL-1. The third experiment also compared two larval densities (100 and 150 larvae...

In situ clearance rate (CR) and biodeposition of the black pearl oyster, Pinctada margaritifera, were followed during several field
experiments from 1996 to 1998 in the lagoon of Takapoto. Serial measurements of total particulate matter (TPM, mg l(-1)),
particulate inorganic matter (PLM, mg l(-1)), and particulate organic matter (POM, mg l(-1)) were related to meteorological
conditions, especially wind speed. As a general case, POM and PLM increased with wind speed. Nevertheless, PLM increased
faster than POM so that the organic content (OC, %) of the TPM decreased progressively when wind speed increased. These TPM
variations induced direct changes in feeding processes of P. margaritifera. CR (l h(-1)) averaged 22 l h(-1) for a pearl oyster of 1 g

In a previous study, a major remodeling of lipids, consistent with the theory of homeoviscous adaptation, was observed in the
juvenile hard clam Mercenaria mercenaria during a temperature reduction from 24 to -1 degrees C. In addition, the lipid
remodeling varied between genetically distinct lines of hard clams. The present study examined whether adult hard clams
originating from different locations and a selectively bred variety show differences related to their genetic characteristics in the
remodeling of lipids that normally occur during decreasing temperatures. Wild hard clams from 4 locations in Atlantic Canada

Hydrothermal circulation at ultramafic-hosted sites supports a large variety of high-and low-temperature hydrothermal vents and
associated ecosystems. The discovery of abundant fossil vesicomyid and thyasirid shell accumulations at the ridge crest,

Expression of immune-related genes in the oyster Crassostrea gigas during ontogenesis
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Tirape, Ana; Bacque, Coralie; Brizard, Raphael; Vandenbulcke, Franck; Boulo, Viviane.
The work presented here reports the expression of immune-related genes during ontogenesis in the oyster Crassostrea gigar.
Expression patterns of 18 selected genes showed that RNAs detected in oocytes and 2-4 cell embryos are of maternal origin and
that gene transcription starts early after fertilization. The expression patterns of 4 genes (Cg-timp, Cg-tal, Cg-EcSOD and Drac3)
suggested that hemocytes appear in the gastrula-trochophore stages. The localization of Cg-tal expression suggested that
hematopoietic cells were derived from vessels and/or artery endothelia cells. Moreover, a bacterial challenge affected the level of
expression of genes. Indeed, a change in expression levels was observed for Cg-LBP/BPI, Cg-timp, Drac3 and Cg-MyD88 genes
in larval...

Bivalve hatchery technology: The current situation for the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas and the
scallop Pecten maximus in France
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Robert, Rene; Gerard, Andre.
The French oyster farming industry relies almost exclusively on juveniles collected from the natural environment; the supply of
spat produced by hatcheries is low, about 10% of the industry's requirements. Development through selective breeding of oyster
stocks which are better suited for aquaculture purposes, is likely to reverse this tendency since only hatcheries will be able to
supply such animals. Scallop farming, which at present is poorly developed in France, relies exclusively on hatchery produced
spat. Although hatchery technology is constantly being improved, significant production problems remain which must be solved
before hatcheries become a major supplier of juveniles for the industry. This paper describes the present state of hatchery...

Monitoring gonadmaturation for protandrous and functional hermaphrodite species such as the giant clamTridacna maxima is
difficult due to the juxtaposition and relative proportion ofmale and female tissues in the gonad [gonadal sex ratio (GSR)]. Here,
the relevance of the widely used gonadosomatic index (GSI) as proxy of giant clam gonad maturation is tested with a large dataset
(n = 265). Gonadosomatic index is compared with other indices, namely the proportion of the male part harboring spermatozoids,
the proportion of empty oocyte follicles, the mean oocyte diameter, and the oocyte elongation. At gonad scale, high index
variability highlighted partial spawning. At individual scale, male and female maturation proxies were contrasted, showing
either...

AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) is a key regulator of energy balance in many model species during hypoxia. In a
marine bivalve, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, we analyzed the protein content of adductor muscle in response to hypoxia
during 6 h. In both smooth and striated muscles, the amount of full-length AMP-activated protein kinase α (AMPKα) remained
unchanged during hypoxia. However, hypoxia induced a rapid and muscle-specific response concerning truncated isoforms of
AMPKα. In the smooth muscle, a truncated isoform of AMPKα was increased from 1 to 6 h of hypoxia, and was linked with
accumulation of AKT kinase, a key enzyme of the insulin signaling pathway which controls intracellular glucose metabolism. In
this muscle, aerobic metabolism...

Bivalve larvae and hydrographic parameters were sampled over a range of spatio-temporal scales in a deep atoll lagoon. Bivalve
larvae abundances were very high throughout the year: 18,550 m(-3) in average. Larvae were (i) concentrated at mid-depth with
nocturnal ascent and diurnal descent, (ii) heterogeneously dispersed at the lagoon scale, (iii) subject to day-to-day variation in
abundance and (iv) transferred between different parts of the lagoon providing evidence of intra-lagoonal connectivity. The
primacy of physical factors was seen on large spatial scale with the diluting effect of water renewal and transfers by
hydrodynamics. On smaller spatial scale, the primacy of biological processes was recognised, with larval swimming activity

Seasonal variation in blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, retention efficiency (RE) responses to natural seston concentrations were
investigated in the Lysefjord, Norway. The smallest particles shown to be effectively retained (100%) were approximately 7 μm
and this was observed on only one occasion. The most common response was for RE to progressively increase from small to large
particles with maximum RE at 30 to 35 μm (8 of 12 experiments). Temporal changes in the seston size distribution towards a
dominance of smaller particles coincided with a decrease in the RE maxima to particles between 7 and 15 μm diameter. The RE of

The controlled upwelling of nutrient-rich deep water in oligotrophic coastal regions has been proposed as a means of increasing
phytoplankton and, subsequently, bivalve aquaculture production. This was tested as part of a large-scale upwelling experiment in
an oligotrophic environment (Lysefjord, Norway). The mean chlorophyll a concentration in the upwelling area was consistently
higher than at the control site (mean ± SD: 3.3 ± 1.9 and 1.5 ± 0.6 mg Chl a m-3, respectively) during the 4 mo of controlled
upwelling. After 2 mo with upwelling, the dry flesh weight of 1 yr-old and 2 yr-old mussels was 95% and 24% higher,

Azadinium spinosum, a small toxic dinoflagellate, was recently isolated and identified as a primary producer of azaspiracid toxins
(AZAs). Previous experiments related to AZA accumulation in blue mussels upon direct feeding with A. spinosum revealed
increased mussel mortality and had negative effects on the thickness of the digestive gland tubules. Therefore we conducted
follow up experiments in order to study effects of A. spinosum on mussel feeding behaviour. Individual assessment of mussel
feeding time activity (FTA), clearance rate (CR), filtration rate (TFR), absorption rate (AR), faeces and pseudofaeces production
were carried out on mussel fed either toxic (A. spinosum) or non-toxic (Isochrisis aff. galbana (T-Iso)) diets. Furthermore, AZA...

The transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta superfamily is a group of important growth factors involved in multiple processes
such as differentiation, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cellular growth. In the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, the oyster gonadal
(og) TGF-beta gene was recently characterized through genome-wide expression profiling of oyster lines selected to be resistant
or susceptible to summer mortality. Og TGF-beta appeared specifically expressed in the gonad to reach a maximum when gonads
are fully mature, which singularly contrasts with the pleiotropic roles commonly ascribed to most TGF-beta family members. The
function of og TGF-beta protein in oysters is unknown, and defining its role remains challenging. In this study, we develop a...

Vibrio aestuarianus strain 01/32 was previously shown to be pathogenic to Crassostrea gigas juveniles. To investigate virulence
mechanisms of this pathogen, we studied the toxicity to oysters of its extracellular products (ECPs). ECPs displayed lethality to
animals, with a LD50 value of 3.3 mu g/g body weight. To determine the oyster cellular immune responses induced by these
ECPs, we further examined in vitro their effects on C. gigas hemocytes, using flow cytometric-based hemocyte assays. Treatment
of hemolymph with ECPs caused a significant inhibition of hemocyte phagocytosis and adhesive capabilities. In contrast, the
pathway of reactive oxygen species production was enhanced by higher ECP concentrations. Exposure of hemocytes to live
bacteria induced...

Arachidonic acid (20:4n-6, ArA) and its eicosanoid metabolites have been demonstrated to be implicated in immune functions of
vertebrates, fish, and insects. Thus, the aim of this study was to assess the impact of ArA supplementation on the FA composition
and hemocyte parameters of oysters Crassostrea gigas. Oyster dietary conditioning consisted of direct addition of ArA solutions at
a dose of 0, 0.25, or 0.41 mu g ArA per mL of seawater into tanks in the presence or absence of T-Iso algae. Results showed
significant incorporation of ArA into gill polar lipids when administered with algae (up to 19.7%) or without algae (up to 12.1%).
ArA supplementation led to an increase in hemocyte numbers, phagocytosis, and production of reactive oxygen species by...

Autores: Renault, Tristan.
Bivalve mollusc culture is a well-developed marine aquaculture activity in many countries around the world, notably in the
northern hemisphere. During the development of this activity, numerous countries have been confronted with infectious diseases
of varying severity and duration. Research has been conducted to determine the aetiology, epidemiology and control measures for
these epizootics. Major epizootics in bivalve molluscs have been caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoan parasites.
Moreover, important commercial relations exist in marine mollusc culture between different geographical areas. This must be
taken into account in explaining the appearance and the spread of some infectious diseases in several countries around the world.

The relationship between azaspiracid shellfish poisoning and a small dinoflagellate, Azadinium spinosum, has been shown
recently. The organism produces AZA1 and -2, while AZA3 and other analogues are metabolic products formed in shellfish. We
evaluated whether mussels were capable of accumulating dissolved AZA1 and -2, and compared the toxin profiles of these
mussels at 24 h with profiles of those exposed to live or lysed A. spinosum. We also assessed the possibility of preparative
production of AZA metabolites by exposing mussels to semi-purified AZA1. We exposed mussels to similar concentration of
AZAs: dissolved AZA1+2 (crude extract) at 7.5 and 0.75 µg L-1, dissolved AZA1+2 (7.5 µg L-1) in combination with Isochrysis

The lipid content of spawned oocytes of Pecten maximus was studied by image analysis of semi -thin histological sections and a
lipid index was defined. The female gametes were obtained by thermic stimulations of mature adults scallops from different
populations after out of season conditioning or sampled in situ during the spawning season. After fertilization, the larval
development was followed. The results reveal a large variability in lipid content of normal oocytes. The lipid content can be
regarded as homogeneous inside a spawning but the heterogeneity is greater for wild scallops than for conditioned ones. A strong
relationship appears between the lipid index and the hatching success, and the number of abnormal larvae after two days rearing.

Herpes-like viral infections have been reported in different bivalve mollusc species throughout the world. High mortalities among
hatchery-reared larvae and juveniles of different bivalve species have been associated often with such infections. The diagnosis of
herpes-like viruses in bivalve molluscs has been performed traditionally by light and transmission electron microscopy. The
genome sequencing of one of these viruses, oyster herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1), allowed the development of DNA-based diagnostic
techniques. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been used for the detection of OsHV-1 DNA in bivalve molluscs at different
development stages. In addition, the PCR used for detection of OsHV-1 has also allowed the amplification of DNA from an

We investigated the role of oyster gonadal TGF beta (og-TGF beta) in the reproduction of Crassostrea gigas, using an in vivo
RNA interference approach. We designed double-stranded RNA targeting og-TGF beta, which is specifically expressed in the
somatic cells surrounding germ cells in the gonad of both male and female oysters. In vivo injection of this og-TGF beta dsRNA
into the gonad led to knock-down phenotypes for both sexes, with significant reduction (77.52% relative to controls) of the gonad
area, lowered reproductive effort and germ cell under-proliferation. Interestingly, half of the injected females halted their
vitellogenesis, since we were only able to observe pre-vitellogenic oocytes. In addition, apoptotic germ cells and haemocytes

The Mediterranean Thau Lagoon is an important oyster farming area in Europe. Oyster growth rates are among the highest in
France, although chlorophyll a concentration is low. Previous studies have demonstrated that picophytoplankton,
nano-microphytoplankton, dinoflagellates and loricate ciliates such as tintinnids are abundant. However, heterotrophic flagellates

Among the marine molluscs, Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is actually the most reared species in the world. Noticeably in
France, where it was imported between 1960 and 1970, and replaced Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata. Intensification of
breeding and the associated introductions of new species may be hazardous. Indeed, they might be responsible for the appearance
and the dissemination of new diseases in bivalve molluscs. In addition to these observations, the quasi monobreeding of C. gigas
in France enhances the necessity to develop research concerning the diagnosis of pathologies affecting this species, namely the
diagnosis of viral diseases. Several families of viruses have been described within marine bivalves molluscs. The purpose of this...

Diverse families of antimicrobial peptides and proteins have been described in oysters. We investigated here how antimicrobials
are involved in the immune response against a pathogenic strain of Vibrio splendidus. Oyster antimicrobials were shown to
display a wide variety of expression profiles in hemocyte populations and tissues. Oyster defensins are constitutively expressed in
specific tissues such as mantle (Cg-Defm) or hemocytes (Cg-Defhs), while Cg-BPI is inducible and Cg-Prp appears
down-regulated in hemocytes upon infection. The migratory behavior of hemocytes that express the different antimicrobials was
found to be involved in the oyster response to a pathogenic Vibrio infection. Indeed, it contributes to colocalize several
antimicrobials that...

Azadinium spinosum (Elbrächter and Tillmann), a small marine dinoflagellate, has been recently described as a de novo producer
of azaspiracid-1 and -2 (AZA1 and -2) diarrhoeic toxins. A culture of A. spinosum was established in our laboratory and
optimised for pilot-scale production of this organism, to evaluate and understand AZA1 and -2 accumulation and
biotransformation in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) fed with A. spinosum. Adult mussels were continuously exposed to A.
spinosum over 1 week in 160 L cylindrical conical tanks. Three different diets were tested for contamination: 5000, 10 000 cells
mL−1 of A. spinosum and a mixture of 5000 cells mL−1 of A. spinosum with 5000 cells mL−1 of Isochrysis aff. galbana (T-Iso,

Morphological Trends of Four Manila Clam Populations (Venerupis philippinarum) on the French
Atlantic Coast: Identified Spatial Patterns and Their Relationship to Environmental Variability

Autores: Caill-milly, Nathalie; Bru, Noelle; Barranger, Melanie; Gallon, Laurent; D'Amico, Franck.
For species' dynamics highly influenced by environmental conditions, sustainable management for conservation and/or
exploitation purposes requires the ability to segregate natural processes from anthropogenic impacts. In this context, identification
of phenotypic variations in morphological patterns, and clarification of the mechanisms involved, constitute useful tools to
identify adequate management measures from Europe-wide to local conditions. Although such approaches are already used
effectively in the management of fish stocks, they are more recent for bivalve stocks, which are also good candidates for such
management tools. The current study examines morphological patterns in the Manila clam (Venerupis philippinarum) through
morphometric studies of 4...

Indigenous peoples of North America, Australia, and New Zealand have a long tradition of harvesting freshwater animals. Over
generations of reliance and subsistence harvesting, Indigenous peoples have acquired a profound understanding of these
freshwater animals and ecosystems that have become embedded within their cultural identity. We have identified trans-Pacific
parallels in the cultural significance of several freshwater animal groups, such as eels, other finfish, bivalves, and crayfish, to
Indigenous peoples and their understanding and respect for the freshwater ecosystems on which their community survival
depends. In recognizing such cultural connections, we found that non-Indigenous peoples can appreciate the deep significance of
freshwater animals...

Аллометрия раковины двустворчатых моллюсков
Provedor de dados: 13
Autores: Заика, В. Е.

High polymorphism in big defensin gene expression reveals presence-absence gene variability (PAV)
in the oyster Crassostrea gigas
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Rosa, Rafael D.; Alonso, Pascal; Santini, Adrien; Vergnes, Agnes; Bachere, Evelyne.
We report here the first evidence in an invertebrate, the oyster Crassostrea gigas, of a phenomenon of Presence-Absence Variation
(PAV) affecting immune-related genes. We previously evidenced an extraordinary interindividual variability in the basal mRNA
abundances of oyster immune genes including those coding for a family of antimicrobial peptides, the big defensins (Cg-BigDef).
Cg-BigDef is a diverse family composed of three members: Cg-BigDef1 to -3. Here, we show that besides a high polymorphism
in Cg-BigDef mRNA expression, not all individual oysters express simultaneously the three Cg-BigDefs. Moreover, in numerous
individuals, no expression of Cg-BigDefs could be detected. Further investigation at the genomic level revealed that in individuals
in...

An ecosystem-based approach to bivalve aquaculture management is a strategy for the integration of aquaculture within the wider
ecosystem, including human aspects, in such a way that it promotes sustainable development, equity, and resilience of ecosystems.
Given the linkage between social and ecological systems, marine regulators require an ecosystem-based decision framework that
structures and integrates the relationships between these systems and facilitates communication of aquaculture-environment
interactions and policy-related developments and decisions. The Drivers-Pressures-State Change-Impact-Response (DPSIR)
management framework incorporates the connectivity between human and ecological issues and would permit available
performance indicators to...

A hemocyte gene expression signature correlated with predictive capacity of oysters to survive Vibrio
infections

Background: The complex balance between environmental and host factors is an important determinant of susceptibility to
infection. Disturbances of this equilibrium may result in multifactorial diseases as illustrated by the summer mortality syndrome, a
worldwide and complex phenomenon that affects the oysters, Crassostrea gigas. The summer mortality syndrome reveals a
physiological intolerance making this oyster species susceptible to diseases. Exploration of genetic basis governing the oyster
resistance or susceptibility to infections is thus a major goal for understanding field mortality events. In this context, we used
high-throughput genomic approaches to identify genetic traits that may characterize inherent survival capacities in C. gigas.

Autores: Grizel, Henri.

immunogold). La...

Menai Bay Conservation Area (MBCA) is situated in the southwest of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago, and
covers an area of 467 km² including 6 islets, with a seaward boundary close to 61 km offshore. It is the largest marine
conservation area in Zanzibar, managed locally by the community and government officials with technical assistance by the
World Wild Fund (WWF). The area is extensively covered with coral reefs, sea grass beds, and mangrove forest. The average
water depth is 10 meters at high tide. The area had remained relatively undisturbed until the mid-1990s, when uncontrolled fishing
pressures combined with destructive fishing techniques became a serious environmental concern

Etude des interactions hôte/virus chez l’huître creuse Crassostrea gigas et son virus Ostreid
herpesvirus 1
Provedor de dados: 5
Autores: Segarra, Amelie.
Ostreid herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1) can be considered one of the major infectious agents in Pacific oysters, Crassostrea gigas, in
France and all around the world. Differences in terms of mortality among infected animals were reported suggesting a genetic
basis of the susceptibility to the OsHV-1 infection. In this context, the main objective of this thesis was to understand the
interactions between Pacific oysters and OsHV-1, in particular, the molecular basis of the viral cycle. Results showed that the
virus is able to replicate in the host regardless of its stage of development or its susceptibility. However, multiplication kinetics is
faster in the most susceptible individuals compared to less susceptible ones. After an active replication phase, it...
