DNA interaction with aluminum ions and nanoparticles in solution.
Belykh Roman
The conformational changes of DNA in aqueous solutions containing NaCl, AlCl3 and
aluminum nanoparticles in different combinations and concentrations were investigated.
Methods used: UV adsorption and Circular Dichroism spectroscopy, viscometry, atomic force
and scanning electron microscopy. It was shown, that aluminum nanoparticles generated by
electro-wire explosion in water are of two types, “needle-like” structures with length of 200—
300 nm and thickness of 2—3 nm, and spherical particles with diameter of 10—80 nm. Only
spherical particles with certain size (approx. 20 nm) bond with DNA. Aluminum ions were
shown to change their form: Al3+, Al(OH)2+ Al(OH)2+ and interaction type with DNA
according to pH of the solution. DNA in high concentration of AlCl3 precipitates regardless of
supporting electrolyte (NaCl) concentration.
