Description:
Optical instruments, field and relay lenses, telescopes, microscopes, optical materials,
achromatization, illumination, cameras, and projectors.
Student Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following:
1.
Describe simple optical instruments including telescopes, microscopes, and projectors.
2.
Discuss afocal systems.
3.
Discuss the fundamentals of cameras and optical imaging systems.
4.
List and discuss the properties of optical materials including dispersion and the methods of
achromatizaiton.
5.
Describe vignetting.
6.
List the properties of a telecentric optical system
7.
Describe the structure and use of a prism spectrometer.
8.
Describe the structure and use of an Abbe refractometer.
9.
Describe depth of field and depth of focus.
10. Describe the basic principles of illumination optics.
11. Discuss the basic principles of optical aberrations.
