Distance and Online Education Student Advising
If you are currently taking or are interested in taking DE courses, and you have questions, DE student support staff can provide you with
information and assistance, or direct you to the appropriate person in your faculty for academic advising. DE student support staff can be
reached by calling 1-888-216-7011, ext. 8012 (Canada Toll Free) or 204-474-8012, by e-mail at [email protected] or in person at
188D Extended Education Complex.
Off-Campus Library Services
umanitoba.ca/libraries/distance_education
We’re here to help! Off-Campus Library Services (OCLS) exists to support Distance and Online Education students. We send out
books, videos and photocopied articles to students living outside Winnipeg, but any Distance and Online Education student can call on
us for other assistance. We also help you with research, technical problems, and can teach you to search the library catalogue and
databases. Contact us if you have questions about finding books, articles and videos for your courses.
Borrow materials by visiting the University of Manitoba Libraries (UML) in person, or request materials by mail, phone, fax, e-mail or
via our online request form at
umanitoba.ca/libraries/distance_education/distance_request.ssl.php.
The UML system includes twenty libraries. Together they have over 2,000,000 volumes, subscribe to approximately 13,000 journals,
and provide access to databases that you can’t get to through Google. Search for these materials with the UML catalogue (BISON) at
bison.umanitoba.ca.
If the materials you want are not in the UML, we can obtain them from another library for you.
Thousands of electronic journals and databases that index thousands more are also available to students through the UML Web site at
www.umanitoba.ca/libraries. View a subject list of databases at www.umanitoba.ca/libraries/elibrary/netdoc/subject.shtml.
The UML subscribes to databases and e-journals so students and faculty can access them, and read and print complete articles via the
Internet. To use these resources, you must be registered as a student or staff member and have received your student or staff number.
You must also have changed your default Library PIN. For more information, visit
umanitoba.ca/libraries/help/help_my_library.html

Resell
There are four options available to students wishing to sell used textbooks:
•
The Book Store conducts a used book buy back throughout the summer months. The buy back begins in mid-April and runs through
till the end of the first week of classes in September. A second term used book buy back is held from mid-November through till the
end of the first week of classes in January.
•
The Book Store pays cash for current editions of textbooks confirmed for reuse at the university. You can sell your texts for 50% of
the current retail price. The buy back is located at the customer service desk in the Book Store, main level, University Centre.
•
You can mail your books to the Book Store indicating that you would like to sell your book. Your request will be processed and a
cheque sent to you. If the book is not reconfirmed for future use, it will be mailed back to you. You are responsible for all postage
costs.
•
The University of Manitoba Students’ Union buys and sells used texts on consignment throughout the year. Archives Book Exchange

Computer Security Tips
It is important to adopt basic security measures to protect yourself and others from computer invasions. For Windows computers we
strongly recommend using a firewall, antivirus software and keeping your operating system up to date with patches. If you don’t have up
to date antivirus software, we encourage you to download Trend OfficeScan free from Software Express.
Adopt basic security habits including not opening any attachment unless you were expecting it.
Avoid clicking on web links inside an e-mail message. They may not go to where you think. Cut and paste the visible address into a
separate browser window.

Inter-Universities Services
ucn.ca
Inter-Universities Services is a consortium of the four Manitoba Universities – Brandon University, the University of Manitoba, the
University of Winnipeg, and University College of the North. Its mandate is to deliver university degree credit courses north of the 53rd
parallel in Manitoba.
In IUS’s On-Site Program, instructors generally travel to northern Manitoba communities on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to teach their
courses in the communities.
IUS serves as a link between students in the north and the universities in Manitoba, enabling northerners to attain university degrees without
having to attend at the university campuses.
