PERSONAL POSTGRADUATE STUDY PLAN (PPSP) FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF
PHILOSOPHY (EDUCATION)

The doctoral degree consists of the dissertation research and studies (40 ECTS credits).The personal
postgraduate study plan (PPSP) summaries studies to be included to the doctor’s degree as well as previous
studies intended to substitute study modules of the doctoral studies, planned schedule and funding of the studies.
The codes, like KASJ1100, refer to the components of doctoral studies as expressed in the curriculum of the
doctoral degree.
Doctoral studies
KASJ1100 Studies in scientific theories and methodology (10-13 credits)
Competence aims: Upon completing KTKJ110 the student
 will know the ethical guidelines of good scientific practice and be able to recognise and analyse ethical
issues in different phases and areas of research (compulsory for every student )
 understand the general premises of scientific theory formation(compulsory for every student )
 understand the specific nature and development of educational science
 have knowledge of the methodologies of educational science
 be familiar with the basic research methods used in educational science and have the ability to use some
specific qualitative, quantitative, historic or theoretical methods
Content: The KASJ1100 consists of
 quantitative methods, qualitative methods and mixed methods as chosen by the student and the
supervisors
 studies on research ethics (compulsory for every student, 3 credits),
 philosophy of science/theory of science (compulsory for every student)
 management of research project; scientific publishing; open science
Method of study (independent study, such as writing an essay, taking an exam or a course)

KASJ1200 Academic communication (2-5 credits)
Competence aims: Upon completing KASJ1200 the student will
 have the ability to communicate using Finnish or English in spoken or written form in academic contexts
Content: Academic writing or oral presentations or academic scientific presentations; communication and
interaction skills also in international contexts, media skills and presentation skills.
Method of study: Courses or study modules offered by the University Language Centre, presentations in
scientific conferences, written articles other than the ones forming part of an article-based doctoral dissertation.

KASJ1300 Postgraduate content studies related to the topic of the dissertation research (20 credits)
Competence aims: Upon completing KASJ1300 the student will
 have knowledge of scientific research and discussions relevant to the topic of the dissertation research
Content:
 Relevant literature, attending scientific meetings, seminars, courses, and conferences, participating in
postgraduate courses, presenting at scientific conferences and seminars.
Method of study:
 The studies consist of exams/essays on the literature, presenting the dissertation research in scientific
conferences or seminars, writing publications (other than those included in the article-based dissertation)
and participation in doctoral courses.
NB! If there are no advanced level educational studies in the master’s degree, it is recommended to include
some here.

KASJ1400 Activities aiming at scientific expertise (5 credits)
Competence aims: Upon completing KASJ1400 the student will
 have the ability to act as an expert in the field of the doctoral dissertation in research-based development,
teaching, and planning tasks in multiprofessional groups
 have the ability to participate in research-based pedagogical activities / possess pedagogical competence
in higher education
 have the skills and capabilities needed in building a professional academic career (e.g. project
management skills, managerial skills)
Content:
 Pedagogical skills, leadership skills, entrepreneurial skills, tasks and skills related to quality
enhancement or development, knowledge about working life connections
Method of study:
 Tasks as an expert in your field of study: planning, teaching and developing tasks in departments and
projects of the University
 Tasks serving the interests of society at large: significant development tasks in society and/or academic
pedagogical studies in your field.
 Courses, guest lectures, meetings developing your expertise in the field, approved as part of the studies
by the supervisors.

KASJ1600 Dissertation thesis
Competence aims: Upon completing the dissertation research, the student is capable of conducting independent,
creative, scientific research in the field of educational sciences evaluate scientific educational research
Content: Carrying out scientific research guided by the supervisors. The research topic falls within the fields of
research strength of the faculty’s research strategy.
