Assessment Instruments Used for Gifted Screening and Identification
Gifted Services
The district ensures equal opportunity for all district students identified as gifted to receive
services offered by the district. Written Education Plans (WEPS) will be created for all identified
gifted and served students within our district. Updated copies of WEPS will be mailed to
parents/guardians once per year.
Students who are identified as gifted in Math, Reading, and Superior Cognitive Ability receive
ODE approved service through our fourth and fifth grade self-contained classrooms.
Acceleration and enrichment opportunities are also available to identified gifted students in
grade K-12.
General
The district accepts scores on assessment instruments provided by other school districts and/or
trained personnel outside the school district if approved for use by the Ohio Department of
Education.
Referral
The district ensures there are ample and appropriate scheduling procedures for assessments
and reassessments using: Individually –administered tests, checklists, and group tests.
Children may be referred on an ongoing basis, based on the following: teacher
recommendation, and/or parent/guardian request.
The district will provide at least two opportunities per year for assessment. Testing for the
purpose of gifted screening/assessment is open to ALL students enrolled in the district.
Transfer
The district ensures that any child transferring into the district will be assessed within 90 days
of the transfer at the request of the parent. Parents shall contact the building principal or gifted
coordinator.
Withdrawal
If at any time, a student wishes to withdraw from the gifted program or services, the request
should be written by the parent to the classroom teacher and gifted coordinator.
Appeal Procedure
An appeal by the parent/guardian is the reconsideration of the results of any part of the
identification process, which should include:
*Screening procedure or assessment instrument which results in identification.
* The scheduling of children for assessment.
* The placement of a student in any program; and receipt of services.
Parents/guardians should submit a letter to the Gifted Coordinator, outlining the nature of the
concerns.
The coordinator will convene a meeting with the parent/guardian, which may include other
school personnel.
The coordinator will issue a written final decision within 30 days for the appeal. The written
notice should include the reason for the decision(s).
Assessment Instruments
“Gifted” refers to students who perform or show potential for performing at remarkably high
levels of accomplishment when compared to others of their age, experience, or environment
and who are identified under decision (A), (B), (C) or (D) of section 3324.03 of the Ohio Revised
Code.
Gifted Identification and Screening
A student is identified as “gifted: based upon nationally-normed standardized tests
administered by the school district.
These can be whole grade regularly scheduled group tests that all students take. If a student
receives a score of 95% or is two standard deviations above the mean, minus the standard error
of measurement, he/she is identified as gifted in that area.
